VIN number ground off
Discussion
Hi all
I'm considering buying a project bike which has had its vin ground off as it has previously been stolen and recovered but not recorded as such.
This occurred a few years ago and it has never been restampted. The vin plate is also missing. The last 6 mots state no number located.
What would I have to do to get the frame restampted?
What else should I be aware of? And how do I protect myself?
If I do get the bike it will make regular trips to France
Thanks in advance

I unwittingly bought a ringed Mk2 RS2000 back in the 80s. Police turned up, took it away, I then bought it again from the original owner's insurance company. Police vehicle inspectors turned up when I got the car back, restamped original VIN in the chassis, and I had to apply for original log book and get original reg plates. I then also bought a replica VIN plate from some Ford Heritage supplier, and had original number engraved on it.
These things happen, as other posters have said, stamp it in yourself.

And I unwittingly bought a R1 engine that had it's engine number removed.
I reported it to plod, who turned up, took one look at the way the number had been removed and declared it stolen recovered on the spot. They gave me some stickers and a reference number to put on the engine. The stickies had a telephone number so that a prospective buyer could call plod and confirm the details. I sold the engine on as stolen recovered.
The Engine number had been removed in such a way that it couldn't be recovered. Apparently this is not normal. Normally the Police would have confiscated the engine and attempted to recover the engine number. No I'm not going to give the details of how the number had been taken off.
Finally, they were very interested in the details of the guy that sold it to me. Initial attempts to trace him with the details he'd given me failed, but it wasn't difficult for me to find his home address after he'd told me that he'd just won a Scottish Rally championship and that he was building himself a space framed Audi TT.

I'd run a mile from it. How do you know it's the bike that was stolen? It's dodgy as hell IMO.
Indeed. You could be buying anything. How do you know the bike you get isn't stolen? I'd buy something else if it were me.
It shouldn't be passing MOT's without a VIN number, that is particularly naughty by whoever is testing it tbh.
Steer well clear.

Called the MOT issuing garage. They say it is perfectly acceptable to issue a MOT with "Not Found" in the Vin box. In such cases this will prompt the DVLA to contract the owner...
No vin is a strict fail. They should have failed it and then got the owner to contact the dvla.
Normally a new vin plate is made up, I've done this before on cars where the vin plate corrodes and is no longer legible.
The whole point of the Vin check is to ensure the vehicle identity is correct.
Tbh I'd stop wasting your time on it and find something else, the garage will say whatever. Phone Vosa and ask them if you really want to persue it.
It does depend on the year of the motorcycle.
"All motorcycles first used on or after 1st August 1999 must have a VIN or Frame number."
(Culled directly from the testers manual.)
Not having a legible Vin number is an instant, major, fail on motorcycles that have to have one. Any motorcycle post 1999 must have a stamped vin number. Pre 99 does noes not, therefore just enter number not found into the system as an advisory.

3 year old thread and your 1st post in nearly 4 years, has to be some sort of record."All motorcycles first used on or after 1st August 1999 must have a VIN or Frame number."
