O/head gantries (again)
Discussion
At the risk of raising an earler debated topic about differing speeds shown on one gantry - I hold my hand up to seeing one tonight -
Approaching J8 North on the M6 -its always a bit frought because J7 has two lanes joining - the inner lane being the ex - hard shoulder, running to the M5 south. Anyway the OH gantry on the approach was showing 30 for lane 1 and 50 for lanes 2 & 3. Following the sign I get ready to get into the inner lane to take the M5 - low and behold a stationary car. The next Gantry then had a red cross. Cue confusion all round.

It's not that confusing. Don't hit the stationary car would be the first priority, worrying about whether you can do 30 or 50 is pretty well moot. The Red Cross still means do not go further in that lane. The differing speed limits several of us were reporting seeing (including a serving traffic officer), were all on the same carriageway, and were different for every lane, 20,30,40,50 was the one I've seen the most (4 lane stretch of the M42).Approaching J8 North on the M6 -its always a bit frought because J7 has two lanes joining - the inner lane being the ex - hard shoulder, running to the M5 south. You are unlikely to see these again, as the HA have promised to stop doing it (as it isn't allowed).

Lane 1 dedicated slip - throw in right arrow
Lane 2 dedicated slip - 30 mph
Lane 1 main c'way - 30 mph
Lane 2 main c'way - 50 mph
Lane 3 main c'way - 50 mph
Confusing to say the least!

The difference in speeds on the same gantry would be because lane 1 would be marked as a dedicated lane for the sliproad (check the white line between that lane and the next) the dedicated lane is treated as a separate entity to the lanes that continue.
Not in this case GafferjimIt was the gantry prior to the on junction. Still 3 lane M6
Lane 1 - 30
Lane 2 – 50
Lane 3 – 50
At the slip entry – then its 5 lanes
In this case
Lane1 - Dedicated to M5 South
Lane 2 – Slip onto M6
3,4,5 Normal M6
The broken down car was in lane 1 and the red cross was on the gantry after that
