Insurance dilemma
Discussion
I think I understand this but would like it if someone could confirm
My wife drives the car (Skoda Superb) that is registered and insured by me , she is named as the main driver, I in return drive the car (Skoda Fabia) that is owned by and insured by her and I am named as the main driver , all above board. This situation occurred as she was needing to do a lot more miles than me and needed the better car.
So we want to change the car she uses for work (Superb) and are buying a new car for this purpose. It seems beneficial for her to register it in her name and to insure it herself.
But
That means I will have to change the registered owner on the Fabia from my wife to me (I dont believe I can insure a car I dont own) adding a keeper which isnt a big deal but what about the tax ? I assume its best if we do this at the end of the month (we could sorn and not use the car for a week or so ) as the car is taxed until July it cant wait until then.
Can I do this all in one go and have a seamless transition ?

Speak to the Insurer before doing all that messing about. Some are less bothered by husband/wife being RK.
This
.OP, you may not need to make any changes at all - your insurers will advise what they need you to do. I certainly had no trouble being insured as the main (and only) driver of my wife's car when she was unable to drive due to serious ill health, for example - but your insurer may or may not be so understanding

Someone has to mention this. There's no such thing as a "registered owner" and the registered keeper does not need to be the owner (read the front of the V5) or vice-versa.In my experience when you are married insurance companies don't care which of you is actually the registered keeper, and yes I do notify them when insuring.
Even the main driver does not seem to make much difference and I flip the family shopping car we share between us each year so that we both maintain our no claims bonus.
The simple question is ask your insurer.

Not usually but the insurer asks "Are you the registered keeper and is the V5 in your name?"
They do and most insist on it being the same. However, the main exception to this is husband and wife. They tend not to care in the main. liner33 said:

Just to clarify. Yes you can but you must declare it. It is always the responsibility of the Driver to ensure they are insured to drive the vehicle. It is the RK responsibility to insure it in respect of Third Party Liability (to keep it legal and on the road per se, not necessarily driven)
