Dart Charge help please
Discussion
Right. I've received a "penalty notice" for a crossing I made on 18 December which I've paid.
I was told over the phone I have two more penalty charge notices due but which I haven't received the letters for yet, and as they're my 2nd and 3rd crossings I won't be given the option just to pay the £2.50 and will have to pay the £35 penalties too.
Now not being from the South and rarely using the crossing I had no warning of the new system being in place or advice on what to do to pay etc so I don't think it's very fair to be charged £70 in penalties for this. The morons at the call centre can't deal with this and the people in charge won't take phone calls.
What can I do?

Why would I know about it? South East local news doesn't usually concern me.
And I'm supposed to read detailed signs when driving on a motorway in pitch black at 11pm?
ETA I'm not arguing about paying the £2.50, that's fair enough, but to slap on a £35 quid penalty is completely unreasonable.

It doesn't interest me either, but it was all over the national news, news sites and Pistonheads, which is how I know about it.McClure said:

Yes. Try opening your eyes and switching your headlights on.McClure said:
Sorry, I forgot everyone on PH is perfect. Should've known I wouldn't get any actual advice on PH. It seems the independent penalty charge tribunal are in support of such situations so I'll speak to them.
I'd have thought you'd have been around this site longe enough to know how this thread would have gone. Here, dry your eyes...

That part of the M25 is very well lit and the signs are very easy to see and read. Edited by McClure on Saturday 7th February 13:50
To be honest you would have to be almost blind or totally distracted not to see the signs.

I've read that they are allowing extra time to pay as the system is in overload for the penalties so if you know the exact dates you could try going online and paying. As for not being aware that's not an excuse as there's plenty of signs and there's been loads of adverts on local and national radio that I've heard.
Edited: forget back payments, you can't do it just checked

I live oop North and haven't used the crossing since last summer, but I knew all about this.
I don't think there is anything you can do now except either pay up, or wait for the follow-up action when you don't. I really think they did a decent job of publicising this - what did you think when you no longer had to pay?

Submit that to the HA as the basis of an appeal against the fines and see how you get on. I assume there is info on line as to how to appeal. What can I do?
