Driving up M40 this morning, northbound around 11am, 3 police cars cruise past in 3rd lane, lights flashing. Next minute the 3rd police car dives over to the hard shoulder quite aggressively causing traffic to brake. Thought that was a bit dangerous driving but nothing more.

Few miles down the road a police car pulls off hard shoulder into middle lane then proceeds to slow all traffic down to about 10 mph. All three lanes now queuing up behind the rolling road block. Mile or two of this and then notice a black audi a6 speeding up the hard shoulder followed by a police car right on it's bumper with it's lights flashing. They were travelling very fast given the rest of the motorway traffic was going at crawling speed. Once the black audi had cleared the rolling road block it swung straight into the 3rd lane followed closely by the police car.

Not sure what happened to them after that - they disappeared off. About 5 minutes later the police car holding all the traffic up suddenly shot off allowing the motorway to flow again.

Very odd, assume this was some sort of training exercise? Could have been nasty if someone had decided to pull onto the hard shoulder at the wrong time but guess they know what they are doing!

I have seen this before and they should not be doing this on busy roads = recipe for disaster and totally unnecessary

Train on an airfield?

OP, are you sure it wasn't something like the movie Speed - where the black Audi couldn't travel below 70mph or else the bomb goes off hehe

They do that too... Not much traffic on airfields generally though.

How is training on an airfield going to be suitable for real life scenarios? They have to do it in the same conditions as they are likely to meet in real life.

Mr Plod: we will stop all traffic using a rolling road block with 1 car and the other 3 practice a Tpac
Mr P2: but Sir we cant as there is no traffic as its a deserted airfield
Mr P1 : don't worry you will never have to do in real life so just use cardboard cut outs and pretend,

Mr Shaoxter now has his car stolen car has been spotted on M40 but isn't stopping so police decide to try and box in, But as people complained they got held up for 5mins on the motorway H&S has now said they cant do it without training on actual carriageways, Would you still come back to complain if they didn't catch the car thief? im a betting man and would say yes!

I understand that the police need to train on public roads. However, what would happen if they did actually cause an accident?

This is by no means an anti police training post, I'm just curious as to what the process is if something goes wrong.

From reading the OP, I got the impression that the training exercise was to closely follow a swerving car, not to practice weaving in and out of traffic which was at a standstill.

Something along these lines I think:

Why would they want to "closely follow a swerving car"? It was almost certainly TPAC training. Something which is carried out all over the UK probably on a daily basis.

Full investigation of the cause and go from there. If there is going to a collision, the planning and continuous safety aspect should ensure it's only ever going to involve police vehicles.

I don't think that was factual. I am reasonably confident that if they had slowed down, the bomb thing wouldn't have exploded.

Can we do it again? This time we do it my way?

I found this and there areva few others not necessarily related to high speed training. I dont think the police should be carrying out 'high speed' training on crowded public roads. Like someone else said an airfield will be a safer option.

I doubt armed response officers will run after 'suspects' and fire real bullets in a crowded public place during a training exercise.

Tube terror training exercises are carried out in closed and controlled enviroments. Should be the same for dangerous high speed pursuit training.

I have seen exactly the same on the M18.

Now they have got it down to a fine art practicing behind a rolling road block they should add some unpredictable nutters into the equation to make it more realistic.
