Hi everyone,

I have a question which may sound simple and daft so apologies in advance.

I am buying a vehicle from a friend and he cannot find full logbook (V5C) as he's misplaced it while moving but he has his new keepers slip (V5C/2) from when he purchased the car 7 months ago.

The car has no tax at the moment. If I was to go into the post office and fill in V62 explaining the situation and take alongside the old new keepers slip (V5C/2) would I be able to tax and apply for a new logbook at the same time???

Otherwise I'm thinking my only option may be ask him to tax it in his name with his V5C/2 on a monthly (direct debit basis) and then on Monday I can go to the Post Office and apply for a new logbook via the V62. Once the owner change is complete he will get a refund of his monthly tax (if any is even deducted by then) and I can retax with my logbook.

Your thoughts?

Can't do it. He can only use the V5C/2 for a shortish period - can't remember if it's two or six months, but it's less than seven.

I'm not quite sure what him taxing it adds to the mix, unless you're planning on using it until you get your V5C through? When DVLA process the V62, they use the change-of-keeper date on that as the date to refund his tax from, not the processing date.

Exactly that frown I wanted to start using it from Monday for my daily commute. Unbelievable these new rules...

I don't think you can blame DVLA for your mate being a disorganised muppet, tbf. If he hadn't lost the V5C in the first place, you'd be fine.

And it would have been so under the old rules as well, there has been no change in this regard (one would buy an untaxed car then tax it using the reference number on the V5C which is lost, hold on, let's use the reference number on the "new keeper supplement" for the chap who is selling the car and which is 7 months old and not valid now, errm scratchchin )...

No change for what is - admittedly - an unusual set of circumstances smile .

Also looks like one can't tax using form V10 until the vehicle is registered in one's name (which will need form V62 and £25)... frown

Another stupid comment. Are these rules supposed to cater for all the idiots out there who don't bother registering cars in their names?

The way I see it, you have two choices that make sense.

1.) Hold off on the purchase. Ask your friend to request a new log book. Wait the two weeks for it to arrive, then buy the car then.

2.) Fill out a form V62 and enclose a cheque for £25. Wait 6 weeks for a log book to come in your name. Also send off a form V10, in which they will tax your car within 10 working days if you also include a cheque for either 6 or 12 months worth of tax.

Either way, it's going to be a minimum of two weeks before you'd be able to drive the thing, so get on with it.

Yes. I did precisely this a couple of months ago. My Dad had lost his V5C and had cocked up the re-taxing of his car, so it was untaxed.

I filled out a V62 with his details declaring that the old one was lost, and got his signature on it. Took it to a post office and taxed the car immediately. There is a £25 fee for the V62. The post office gave me a receipt showing the tax paid and the vehicle reg, so this was the proof needed if stopped by the police before the database was updated. I emailed my Dad a scan of the receipt to put his mind at rest about driving the car. He received his V5C in a couple of weeks, but this delay didn't prevent him driving.

You can do this immediately and drive the car straight away. People saying you'll have to wait x weeks are simply wrong.

By the way, the new keeper supplement is a red herring and won't be of any use to you at all. You don't need it; it'll just confuse matters.

No. Not wrong.

Your dad was already the registered keeper of his car. The OP hasn't even bought his car yet.

But the OP's mate can tax it at the PO using a V62, because he's the keeper. Probably.

This is true, providing he is willing to do so. £10 says nothing gets done, and in 2 weeks time no one has sent anything off and the vehicle is still not taxed.

Just to update: went the PO today with V5C/2 and V62. They crossed out his details on V5C/2, took V62 and £25 and were able to tax the vehicle for me. Happy days.

Oh? Well I stand corrected. Well done. As it turns out, the car I bought was Cat C, and so has no log book.

Are you sending him the £10 then?
