Just wondering if there's any point in reporting somebody blatantly littering out of a car/van window while driving.

This afternoon, I was driving down a dual carriageway, when I started to notice a few bits of recently dropped litter, i.e cardboard chip boxes and other stuff that hadn't been squashed or rolled to the side of the road yet.
I recognised the litter as coming from KFC.

I looked ahead and saw a silver Transit van, and as I watched, he threw another piece of rubbish out.

I then pulled alongside him and mouthed 'Use a bin' at him, to which he mouthed 'feck off' and raised a single finger.

I shook my head and carried on and pulled back into the lane in front of him. About 300m later, I had to pull off the dual carriageway, and as I did so, he drew up alongside me, wound his passenger window down and threw his KFC coke/pepsi cup at me while screaming something unintelligible.

I've got his reg, but just wondered if it's worth wasting mine and someone else's time by reporting him, or just chalk it up to another knob on the road.

I'm in 2 minds. Part of me would love him to be spoken to about his behaviour, part of me thinks reporting it would indeed be a waste of time. Don't suppose there was any livery on the van?

I had someone launch a cup of coffee in my window as they drove past shouting something at me. Got reg, phoned police etc, told I'd be called back aspa to get details and deal with it. Got a call back about the incident 3 months later. Fantastic.

Report him via the non-emergecny number. It's hardly a waste of much time even if it comes to nothing.

Littering is fking stupid.

The only way the police or council could do anything about it was if you had a dash can as a record of the incident. Then I am sure they would at least speak to him and likely procecute him for the offence he committed.

I'm afraid that I had no dash cam, and there was no livery on the van.

I could track his entire lunchtime purchase over a period of about 2 miles. Clown!

Doubt he'd change. I was brought up not to litter so I don't. Lots of people didn't have the same standards instilled.

Would the fact that he threw something at you not make the police a bit more interested? Still your word against his but I would still phone it in.

I pick up no end of rubbish on my morning bike ride and have witnessed people in a layby chuck out carrier bags of rubbish but always felt that it was not worth reporting for reasons above.
However I did manage to persuade the council to put a sign in the layby which said
"Strictly no dumping of litter maximum fine £25,000"

A week later there was a pile of magazines dropped right under the sign. I looked slowly through them (as they were of course pornographic!), and to my surprise there was a slip of paper with a name and address on it.
Called the council waste officer and thought I would hear no more but three months later there was a local bloke fined £100 for the offence.
Since then I have had more results using the council contact when I find names and addresses in black bin liners. The council officer has to be careful as often the "culprits" are pensioners who have asked someone to tidy their house/garden for them and it is those people who do the dumping.

Who me ?

Back to the topic, it's high time more attention was paid to those chucking out of the window- it might end up on/in a biker's helmet, or on a cyclist's face.
On the rubbish dumping idea- councils are often their own worst enemy. How many council estates & empty houses end up with front garden full of rubbish as folk won't/can't pay councils to collect, at a time when the council decides it will . Local case- housing estates manager staff were run off feet emptying front gardens of sofa's /fridges etc. Local residents association suggested skip in different place each week. After that the idea expanded as it was successful and saved money.

dream on
the dash cam police force only ever get taken seriously when one of their videos goes viral and the real police are forced to take action to appease the public

Has anyone noticed the state of the motorway verges recently? I had to go down to Northampton and back on Monday through the day and the entire M1 verges from Leeds down there and back is absolutely brimming with rubbish for what must be around 300 miles! WTF is going on? It can't all be takeaway waste from the MSAs.

Sadly we live a country with a firmly established underclass. Trying to confront anyone about their actions leads to abuse or violence and there's nothing the police can or will do. Welcome to Britain frown

It really boils down to people thinking that "someone else will pick it up".

Littering annoys me, its an obvious sign of low intelligence and lack of sincerity towards nature or the environment.

The local council should have a littering web page and associated form.

Manchester has a online form for example - https://secure.manchester.gov.uk/site/custom_scrip...

This

I travel the roads of France and Spain on a very regular basis and in general verges are spotless. Its a 'who gives a fk' attitude in the uk and the ones that do litter will live in st themselves, no amount of education will ever change that. The very reason the UK is known as the sthole of Europe..

Do please at least contact the local authority and check whether they are interested in pursuing this. Some councils do appear to be keen to act in these circumstances.
