10 Minutes Leeway on Parking Tickets
Discussion
On the radio this morning, a new law is coming in to say you can't be ticketed until 10 mins after your time expires.
I just don't see the point. People will see their ticket runs out at 11:00. So they'll know they have until 11:10. Then when they get back at 11:11 and they've got a ticket, they will go mental because they were only a minute late and it's not fair and they're all bloodsucking leeches.
You'll still get the same irrational anger.

It is the
That interests me. Does this open the door to challenging Nottingham's workplace parking levy? This is purely a scheme to generate profit from parking as there is no cost to the council, other than the cost of collecting the money.

How about abolishing parking fees completely for people parking for less than two hours?
That might revive your town centres a bit.
Or how about encouring small business and not allowing supermarkets to dominate a community?
No, just a tiny scrap of a leaway on your existing tax, how generous of you! You have my vote

Exactly. Buying votes. Nothing more.I just don't see the point. People will see their ticket runs out at 11:00. So they'll know they have until 11:10. Whilst I see "vote winning bribe" written all over it too, the principle - that minor transgressions receive lesser punishment, even down to zero for the most minor - doesn't sound that unreasonable to me.TwigtheWonderkid said:

Some people will probably treat it like that - although their spluttering rants will now be coming from a weaker position than before - but whatever other ulterior motives might be behind it, I don't think anyone's suggested that this policy has the power to cure idiots. You'll still get the same irrational anger.

In taunton particularly they have privatised the parking enforcement to NSL and the town centre is suffering as people are going to retail parks in nearby cities because of the aggressive and relentless manor in which the rules are enforced.
Now it used to be that it was to ensure safe and legal parking and to keep the roads moving freely but they seem to treat it as a revenue ticket issuing exercise.
Example stopped in a loading bay outside estate agent walked in handed keys in signed a form was in 3mins and came out civil enforcement halfway through writing the ticket on her machine. She said its a loading bay : said I was unloading a set of keys, proceeded to debate the sense in parking in the nearest car park and paying for 1 hours parking and spending 10 mins walking etc she could not see any common sense however.
When I stated I returned to the car within 5 minutes and therefore at this stage all she should be doing is noting the car has been noticed by herself. She then ok on you go.
Ticketing for ticketing sake!

If your train leaves at 1pm, and you arrive at 1:01, to see it pulling away, do you scream abuse at the driver?

In our local town's council car park parking is free after 3pm Mon-Sat and all day Sunday. Doctors and dentists complain that everyone wants appointments after 3pm!That might revive your town centres a bit.

Taunton deane charge till late in most 6-8pm and then they charge of bank holidays! Then occasionally they say at christmas parking is free after 4:30pm on a last few sats leading up to xmas cause there very generous like that!
I'd rather councils stop enforcing stupid things just to squeeze as much money out of people as possible, such a non-transferable tickets. As long as the space is paid for, who cares which car is using it? Similarly, car parks which have a minimum amount/time you can buy parking for. I've never been late getting back to my car, but I've often had to pay for an hour of parking to make a 15 minute expedition to the shops. And machines which charge you something like 90P, or £1.20, but don't give change. So unless you have a pocket full of different denominations, you have to overpay anyway.
It really bugs me. Council leaders do everything they can to make it as difficult as possible for people to use their cars to visit the town, take the mick with the above policies when they do, then piss and cry about the demise of their high streets and act surprised when people go elsewhere.

It is free all weekend now in Northampton. It certainly seems busier in the town centre lately, so it seems to work. That might revive your town centres a bit.

My local council wasted millions building two out of town park and rides and neither of them are practical for me to use ie much further to drive and then get a bus back past my house, yet that will be their response if I complain about there CEO's enforcement tactics "you can park all day for £2 mr jbsporstech"!It really bugs me. I've always got a few quid in mixed change in a pot in the car. It really bugs me. It's not that unreasonable to keep some small change in the car for such occasions though, no?
