Hi all

I received at my home here in NL a letter from Avis - 2 months after I rented a car from Avis in the UK, stating that I was being charged GBP30 admin costs and that they had passed my details on to the xxx police force for "Traffic charge - intended prosecution".

No other details were given - e.g. Fixed penalty notice, speeding etc.

I don't remember being flashed or even doing anything naughty - however;
1. What is the likely cause - speeding ?
2. Given I don't live in the UK or have a UK license - the chances of being fined ?

Thanks

Does that mean the OP is in the clear bar the aforementioned admin charge?

Yes. Just the same as if one of us was ticketed driving a rental car abroad. Foreign fines as yet unenforceable in UK courts and vice versa.

Cheers all.

If anything changes I'll let you know but I'll rest a little easier now.

Could be speeding. Could be bus lane. Could be traffic lights. Could be box junction. Could even be parking, but less likely.

If it were parking / congestion charge then EPC plc would attempt to enforce it.

Agreed but not true for parking fines from the EU. There was a member on here who was prosecuted overseas then the fine was transferred to Leeds Magistrates' Court for enforcement. Not sure how that ended though.

I think it depends on the EUR country visited.
My parents were visiting in their UK registered car over a year ago and got a parking ticket. I called the issuing party here in NL and they said that my parents would have to wait for the payment request. Needless to say they never received it.

I knew someone who received a letter from a car rental firm in Boston Mass saying they owed money for a 'traffic violation' in New York. Does this mean he could have ignored it or would he have been carted off in irons the next time he entered the USA?
