Wanting to buy that heap is definitely cause for concern. Lovely cars when they are in good condition, but that looks fit for scrap metal.

Q: Hi sorry me again. I would like to buy the car. I think I MOTED it ?? I own the mot centre at the rear of East grinstead tyres ? 05-Mar-15
A: you have to bid for it sir

If that comment is genuine and not some strange ruse, the fact the guy who moted it wants to buy it, suggests it's probably a very good shed

Do a Vehicle Enquiry on it.

Date of First Reg - 02 April 2003.

So, yes, it looks like it did sit around for five years unregistered and brand new - or it was imported from elsewhere in 2003, and the import was mucked up.

I had a 1999 plate car that was imported from Guernsey in 2003. It had the correct reg on the plate (T) but any online check would show it registered in 2003.

The only time it ever caused a minor issue was when a garage would search for parts. They tended to ignore the year on the plate and go by what the computer was telling them. The Mk2 model came out in 2001 so every now and then the wrong part would turn up and I'd have to explain.

It wasn't an issue as the car was a gem and the history impeccable.

Unlike this Volvo possibly.

It must have been left unregistered for five years when new???
My 1964 classic came to the UK in 2001 and was given a "B" number plate but showed up at DVLA first registered 2001.

There was a dealer near me advertising a "2011" Peugeot 607 with 5000mls on the clock?? I did some investigation, the mileage was correct, the car was mint,BUT? it was built in France in 2004.

New cars can get "lost in transit",stored and forgotten,or simply left unsold.

Years ago I was involved in warranty claims for Peugeot/Talbot.When I was processing a claim for a new Avenger I realised it was four years old. In those days I think Peugeot inherited 1000`s of unsold new Avengers,Horizons and Alpines, most of which were crushed?? best place for them.

I had a Honda Prelude 2.2 vtec that was imported from Ireland. Should have been put on an L reg, ended up with an 01 plate for whatever reason. I was also down as the first owner with no previous keepers.

I did phone and ask the DVLA and they just said it must have been done in error and just to leave it as it was.

It was a pain to both insure and re-sell as a result.

They take abuse very well. That hasn't been abused so much as tortured.

In the last pic the front wheel isn't even on the car.

On the plus side it will break for more than the current bid by some margin, I suspect that's the only future this car has.

Thanks for the replies, so it looks like a DVLA thing then? Unlike them to cock something up biggrin

As a mechanic between jobs I thought it would be ideal for me get running right and use it to lug tools around in and tow the odd snotter home.
I takes the reg OK if I try to add it to my trade policy, not worried about resale - ASM Recycling don't seem to fussy about that sort of thing.

If you zoom in on the last pic the wheel is still on and has a tyre next to it.

I've read today that some 220 turbo tomcats were left unregistered for 4 years. Apparently there's a scrappage thing in place meaning if a car is left unregistered they need to be scrapped. So there are 5 or so 220's on 1999 plates instead of 1995, when they were built.

No, but quite often there'll be a period where stuff built before a change in C&U regs can be registered for a period after a change that it doesn't meet comes in.

So, for something without a cat, 1996 was the latest it could be registered. I don't know what changes there were in '95, but they'd probably have not met them.

<snip>
i have had an ex MoD white fleet car , the registration it wears on de-mob is correct for the date it was first used / built but the date of registration on the V5 is when it was de-mobbed as it wore either military plates of one of the MODs ghost civvie plates when in service.
