Exceeding Goods Vehicle Speed Limit
Discussion
Quick question, a couple of weeks back whilst at work I had to take a LWB Citroen Relay van from Glasgow to Perth (Broxden Services) to swap with a driver at our Aberdeen branch. I drove up the A9 which now has SPECS average speed cameras north of Dunblane, anyway I always assumed dual carriageway speed limits were 70 for everything but trucks over 7.5T and buses, so I sat between 65 - 68 mph the whole way through 30 miles of the average speed cameras, thinking I'd be OK as I was doing at least 2mph less than speed limit, now I'm told vans are only allowed to do 60mph on dual carriageways so I've effectively sped by between 5 and 8mph for a whole 30miles of cameras.
My question is can those cameras tell what type of vehicle and prosecute you for breaking the speed limit for that type of vehicle or does it simply time passing objects between the points to get an average speed and if its under the 70 limit not bother issuing a ticket irrespective of vehicle type, or can it differentiate between cars, vans and trucks and not ticket a car doing 68 in a 70 but ticket that van because although doing less than the 70 limit of the road it's breaking the 60 limit it should be doing? I've heard camera vans can differentiate and prosecute van drivers for doing 70 in a 70 limit when they should only be doing 60 but I'm guessing these are different as they are human operated whereas all fixed cameras are surely just cameras which can pick up the speed of an object coming towards them, they aren't equipped with human intelligence of being able to identify different types of vehicle.

Yes they can.
You won't get a ticket at those speeds
Read the Highway Code again, quite a few things you might need to refresh your knowledge on.
So just to confirm, even though I was doing 5 - 8 mph over the speed limit for the type of vehicle I was driving through 30 miles of average speed cameras picking up at every set of cameras I was doing they much over the limit, I won't get done? You won't get a ticket at those speeds

How do you know you were 5 to 8 mph over the limit as an average speed?
Do you have a calibrated average speed computer?
Your speedo will be reading a few % higher than the actual speed and the guidelines are that 10% + 2 is the threshold for prosecution, so a genuine 68 mph average between two cameras might, just might, trigger an NIP.

I had a sat nav on to GPS verify I wasn't exceeding what I thought was my limit of 70mphDo you have a calibrated average speed computer?

You sound like you want to get done for speeding. Feel free to hand yourself in at any local police station. Camera vans wiil do you for exceeding the speed limit with a van and Gatsos certainly will, I got done by a Gatso on the A9 at Dunkeld at 12.30 at night. I dont think the specs will, they clock every vehicle passing between a set of cameras but I would imagine they only flag up those breaking the limit, I very much doubt they have software quick enough to search DVLA database and differentiate between vehicles, nor I expect do they have personnell scanning all logs to pick up vans over cars.

Apparently after a bit of googling the A9 specs can tell what speed you were doing and in what type of vehicle and automatically tell if you were breaking the limit for that type of vehicle, so I've resigned myself to getting done, my only hope is: 1. Specs allow the same as ordinary cameras I.e. 10%+2 threshold, and 2. If I do get done I hope its just the 1 offence, as I "sped" for the whole 30 miles of cameras and I'm told there's 12 cameras but they all work together and can tell that youve been speeding between each and every one, so excluding the first camera that's potentially 11 separate speeding tickets I could be getting here.LoonR1 said:

Don't forget that if you're disappointed and don't get nicked, as you're determined to get done, you can always hand yourself in at the local station.
It actually sounds more like the OP just wants to be reassured for their own piece of mind that they wont have a speeding ticket come their way. That should be quite understandable really and not worthy of silly statements!

I'd already reassured him, as had a few others, that he won't get a ticket. That didn't stop him posting subsequently to say "I'm resigned to getting a ticket". It's clearly an attempt to get a big ranting thread going about how unfair tibia to be caught in a van and that nobody would ever know the speed limit That should be quite understandable really and not worthy of silly statements!

How do the GATSOs differentiate between a car and a van then? (in terms of triggering the camera)What speed did you get done by the GATSO?

Yep. I'd like to know too as my van is more or less the same silhouette at the rear as an X5 and identical to a Mercedes Viano people carrier. What speed did you get done by the GATSO?

When I got caught by the Gatso it was in a 7.5 tonner..
So not really a 'van', then ?FWIW, a Gatso Type 24 can discriminate between car and 'lorry' sized vehicles, and different trigger speeds can be set for either vehicle type. There's also a setting on the radar control unit to trigger on just lorries, just cars or on all vehicles.
The unit couldn't tell the difference between a car and a small van.

I'm surprised vans don't have a sticker in them to tell the drivers what the limits are.
I'm gobsmacked that people who drive vans for work don't know what the limits are.My daughter was on a speed awareness course and a "pro" van driver genuinely seemed to have no idea different limits applied. There's a 4 lane road near us that's a single carriageway and the multiple Gatsos on it apparently do catch vans exceeding 50.
