Long story short, a neighbour up the street in social housing was recently kicked out by the courts having been found guilty of dealing drugs and other general anti-social behaviour. He'll be back soon, but in his absence I note that this thing has appeared on a lamp post near to his house - so my question is, quite simply, what is it, and what's it for?

Looks very much like those passive infra-red triggered video cameras that are used to capture video of wild animals in jungles etc. They only record when they sense some warm moving within range.

Possibly someone wants to gather evidence of the scrote's presence (or his customers) at that address?

Yep - it's just up the road and angled directly at the front of his house where his 'customers' used to park, so I presume it's motion-activated and records numberplates/normal pictures as stuff goes by. My only slight concern is that this is now recording the whole street who must drive past to get in - so I better make sure my insurance and tax are up-to-date! (which I do by the way).

Subtle it is not - perhaps an empty box designed to be a deterrent?

What a brilliant idea, shame our local plod didn't install them instead not believing us and ignoring the antics of our drug dealing neighbours.
For over a year!

Threatening to go public with the CCTV we installed did though.

This lad was dealing for some time - probably around a year. Tiny flat, two dogs, skanky missus, unlicensed motorbikes - proper chav scum. The ASBO keeps him away for 3 months, but that ends, oddly enough, tomorrow I think.
