ANPR Cameras - any use after accident?
Discussion
A couple of weeks' ago my beloved had her Jazz 'customised' while parked outside a local Church (she was inside giving a reading at the time). Car was parked legally in daylight, weather good, clear visibility etc etc.
Upon returning to the parked car she found a scribbled note wedged into the door gap reading 'White Transit OU55??? crashed into your car'. No name of witness, no address. Car has suffered damage to bumper + wing + doors and lost a mirror housing. Hard to think other driver would not have been aware of it. Paint scrape is white, too, leading credence to the note.
We've passed the details on to the police and our insurer.
However, immediately adjacent to where the car was parked sits an ANPR camera, facing the 'crash site'.
Does anybody know if these cameras run all the time? Would they have images of the event?
So far the police have told us they've spoken to the other party who have admitted it's their van, but, they were not there...
What next?

Ahh right, I thought the witness hadnt captured the full reg number. I don't think the ANPR record video but can't be 100% sure on that, I thought they used software to identify the registration number and report back if there is an offence commuted. It might use video to prove said vehicle was there though, did you ask the police this question? Did they determine of there was any identifying marks on the van?
Could there be any other cctv in the area covering this spot? Might be worthwhile to go and have a look around just in case.

You really have two choices...- Suck it up and pay for the damage yourself.
- Claim from your own insurer, passing the plate to them, and accepting the fact that the keeper is very likely to deny any knowledge to their insurer, meaning it'll end up as an at-fault claim.
Do you know the plate wasn't cloned?
Do you know the reg was written down correctly, and that it wasn't just a coincidence that the wrong plate was also a white Transit?
Do you know that really was the right plate, and that the note wasn't left by somebody with a vendetta against an ex-colleague/supplier/whoever else?

...TBH, I'm surprised the Police have done as much as they have. I very much doubt you'll get ANPR checked after "a couple of weeks" for only a minor damage-only incident...
We did mention the camera when reporting it as a hit and run the next morning - approx. 20 hours after the incident. But the front of office staff were non-committal. None of the bods on the telephone would discuss what the camera could see/couldn't see etc etc. Hence post.yorkshireegg said:
Surely there will be the equivalent damage on the van and the police know the registered address. Can't they go and have a look see?
"Look! A 10yo white Transit with a scrape on it! Proof positive!"Oh, look. There's another. And another. And another. And another. And another...
I feel for you. I had a similar incident years ago. Even if you had a witness (which I had a few) you need the witnesses to positively identify the driver. All the cretin did who hit me was claim his car had been conveniently stolen, then driven back 30 miles and parked back round the corner from his house! Bits of my car were stuck in the front of his. No matter.
Suck up NCB loss I am afraid.

You can still claim from the vehicles insurance even if it's been stolen.Suck up NCB loss I am afraid.

Having spoken to the 'liaison officer' the ANPR camera is live feed only - no recording.
Strangely, the other party suffered a catastrophic vehicle fire THE SAME NIGHT and his Tranny is no more.
Odd, really.
Anyhow, without a witness we can make no progress. Goodbye (uninsured) NCB.
That sucks. Was the van even insured?Strangely, the other party suffered a catastrophic vehicle fire THE SAME NIGHT and his Tranny is no more.

Regarding the ANPR camers - I used to work for TfL and most of the ANPR cams on their network didn't even send an image - they were IP connected and used onboard processing that scanned each frame for text and sent that through to the central server (with timestamp and location info).
