Hi all,

I was snapped by a speed camera van a few weeks ago on Snake Pass.

I was in the Z4 travelling away from the reservoir toward Glossop. When I arrived at the long straight, the road opened up with not a car in sight and I gave the throttle a good squeeze, unfortunately forgetting for a moment that I was in a blanket 50mph zone. Seconds later I noticed the speed camera van parked in the lay-by half concealed by the foliage and he certainly noticed me. Unfortunately I was travelling well in excess of 50mph at that point and this was sufficient to warrant a court attendance, as confirmed by the surprisingly polite letter I received from the police after returning the NiP.

I haven't received my court date yet, but understand that I will either be facing 6 points and a hefty fine if I am very lucky, or a short term driving ban.

Obviously I have to take whatever punishment is deemed appropriate by the court and I figure it makes sense to plan for the worst. Therefore I wondered if anyone has experience of insuring their car after serving a short term driving ban for speeding?

My broker suggested that I would likely see a hike in premium of circa 10% following a short term ban, but this seems way too optimistic to me.

Has anyone got any experience that they would be kind enough to share?

No direct experience - but I did have a play on a price comparison website a year or so ago out of curiosity and found that for me there wouldn't be much difference between 6 points and a ban of 1 month in terms of future insurance costs. Either would have added about 25% to my cheapest quote, though there wouldn't have been as many insurers to choose from.

It can vary a lot depending on your own individual circumstances though. I'm middle aged, middle class, live in a low risk area and am generally rather boring. A young driver might find that it made a much bigger difference - both in absolute and percentage terms. For someone even more boring than me 10% might not be wildly optimistic - I assume your broker has some idea of what he's talking about.

Interesting - thanks for sharing that.

I am 32, have max NCB and own a small professional business so would appear to be fairly desirable from an insurance risk perspective.

If anyone else has any experience they would care to share I would really appreciate it.

23, in a high risk postcode (liverpool)

has added almost a third to my premium after getting 6 points.

What was the speed? I got done in Bala a few years ago doing 86 in a 50 and got 5 points and £400 at court, you may not get a ban.

I was caught at 124 in a 60 and received a £500 fine and 30 day ban. The endorsement was just an SP30 and the insurance company just asked about the level of fine.

My insurance was pretty much not affected at all. Due to turning 25 just after the ban it actually went down a bit.

Howitzer - SP30 is non motorway speeding offence. Unrelated to the sentence.

Speed is 81/50 according to the other thread. The Yorkshire courts guideline is a 14 day ban. National guideline is 7-56 day ban or 6 points. Fine band B.

A few years back, I tried for and received a ban, 91 in a 60 and I got 7 days. .

Before I went to Court I asked my insurance company if a ban would rocket my insurance, the reply back was that as long as it wasnt more than 6 points or 6 months it made no differnce.

I prefered the ban to the points as I didnt want them hanging around me. In the end they gave me six points and a ban, just that the points didn,t count as I was banned.

Happy days for me.

Definitely better than owning a large, unprofessional business.
