Bought a s/h XK a couple of months ago from a Jaguar dealer, who threw in 6 months road tax on the car, as part of the deal. It's all on the paperwork.

About a week ago, I sent off the forms to the DVLA to transfer a private plate from my bike to the car.

Today, I receive all the stuff back from the DVLA claiming that there is no tax shown on their records for the XK.

I haven't received the new V5 for the car as I bought it, I was using the tear off section from the old V5 to process this.

Now I will take this up with the dealer tomorrow but, since we don't get tax discs anymore - how on earth do we know that they have actually taxed it and, if stopped by the police, what is the likely stance?

Technically, if the car is indeed not taxed, I've been using it believing that it is.

Thank you - shows it as taxed...

But the letter from the DVLA says the money is being refunded to the previous owner.

Will contact Jaguar tomorrow to clarify and then ring the DVLA.

That's the way tax works now. All cars are sold without tax and the remaining tax refunded to the previous owner.

Cue the following:
1. People wishing we still had paper discs
2. Complaints about being caught without tax
3. People saying that it's all a big scam to get everyone to pay tax twice

The dealer has not sent in the V5 to the DVLA by the sounds of it, neither can they throw in tax now as the log book change triggers a refund and therefore all cars at change of ownership are untaxed until the new owner taxes it themselves.

Of course a dealer can tax a car on the buyer's behalf. They do it in EXACTLY the same way as the new keeper would, using the doc ref from the V5C/2.

With the new VED arrangements I wouldn't trust any third party to deal with an obligation which is mine alone. After buying my most recent acquisition I checked the DVLA site - https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ - each morning while waiting for the kettle to boil. When the left hand panel came up red I retaxed it immediately online using the V5C/2.

As Aleksandr Orlov is fond of saying...

Well, surprise surprise, I rang the DVLA this morning and they admitted that they are wrong.

The car is taxed and the letter should not have been sent out to me.

All of the paperwork is in order but there was some confusion over the car.

So the transfer is back on.

I get this a lot when I tax cars on behalf of customers. You'd think if DVLA introduce a new system they'd be able to see that a car has just been taxed on a V5C/2 for change of owner but it seems not!!!

I had a cherish transfer returned to a customer today for just the same reason

Good point, if they do it that way it will work.
