Hello all, i have a question i cant seem to find the answer to and no one i ask seems to know including the dvla website or the person i rang yesterday. i passed my test in april 1989 , i still have the original licence and it allows a variety of categories such as 7.5 ton and minibus that is not included nowadays. i drive a 7 and a half tonner now and again and with my licence i am legal, if i change to photo card will this cat be not on the licence ? ive been told that paper licences prior to 1998 are still valid but some say no paper licence will be valid after june 8th this year. just dont want to lose my entitlement to drive categories as i use them

The paper counterpart of the photocard licence is being done away with and there are no current plans to do away with the old-style paper licence which remains valid with any existing entitlements but...

... if you are driving a 7.5 tonner for work (or anything above 3.5T) you have needed a CPC since last September!

Going to a photocard doesn't change your entitlements, unless DVLA screw it up.

You don't need to do anything, your paper licence is still valid, the rule change just means that if you have the photocard and counterpart you can get rid of the counterpart.

The photo licence paper counterpart is still needed until June (the 8th from memory, but I could be wrong...).

In the meantime, photocopy EVERYTHING one sends to DVLA to be sure that if entitlements go, errm, missing (or other mistakes are made by them) then the toss can be properly argued with 'em wink .

Surely easier to pretend you've lost your paper licence and order a new style replacement.

That way, if any entitlements go missing you'll can conveniently find your old licence and get them reinstated.

That's extraordinary. How on earth are they going to spend 35 hours teaching a professional driver how to drive every 5 years? I would think a 1 hour test would be over the top but 35 hours?

1 day in the classroom every year - it isn't that hard. Except that, in the lead-up to the introduction, too many drivers and employers left it too late so we reached a point where there weren't enough training days left for everyone who needed them before the law came in.

However, the actual content is widely seen to be pretty much pointless for experienced drivers and, with no test at the end, there is little incentive to do much more than turn up and get the "tick the box". I've even heard of one driver who did nights and spent the days sleeping in the classrooom. Don't know if it is true, but it certainly ties in with the guys taking their ipads, books and newspapers in to occupy themselves.

Quite a lot of drivers seem to have given up and went off to do something else that is less regulated.

Check your licence online before you send it to the DVLA.

www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

All the photocopies in the world won't help if the DVLA screw up.

Is there a reason for changing to a photocard licence?

Dude I sent my license back to dvla to have a ban removed from about 6 years ago anyway they sent my license back with the ban still on there but... They had removed my category a (motorcycle entitlement) the dvla are beyond incompetent and not fit for purpose... If I was you I'd try to get someone to check your license entitlements and maybe sign a photo copy (a doctor jp etc) or just say you have lost it and get a replacement

Your licence will still be valid after the 8th June so don't bother changing it unless you particularly want a photo id licence. Although your licence will be eventually withdrawn and you'll need a plastic card it isn't happening yet so hold on and no, you wont lose your entitlements as it's grandfather rights not anything extra you've passed.

BEFORE you send in your licence , visit https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence and download/ copy the 3 pages of info . At least you will have a DVLA copy of your present licence if/when they do cock up . Then send it in signed for on reciept ,so if it gets lost in DVLA mail, you can prove it .
P1 gives details about you and licence issue.
P2 details the entitlements
P3 shows points etc .

"From 8 June 2015, the photocard licence counterpart will not be valid and will no longer be issued by DVLA. When DVLA stops issuing the counterpart, you may destroy yours but you still need to keep your current photocard driving licence. Entitlements, endorsements and the status of your driving licence won’t change and can be checked online.

Paper driving licence holders (those issued before 1998)

These will remain valid, and should not be destroyed. From 8 June 2015, endorsements will no longer be recorded on these driving licences. This information will be held on DVLA’s driver record, and can be checked online . The next time you need to update your name, address or renew your licence, you will be issued with a photocard only."

A paper licence is valid until your 70th birthday or 19.1.2033 - whichever comes first. Of course, this could change if we leave the EU.

I don't get the point as to why you've repeated what I've said.

Of course you're correct although I didn't quote your post as I completely missed it so it was a waste of 2 minutes of my life posting in the first place.

At

But with the amount of posts about DVLA not putting on all the entitlements ,or losing the licence, it might be worth while taking a copy of the 3 pages on line about your licence - it shows up as a DVLA page ,and sending licence using signed for .
