Good morning.
Went for a drive last night over the Cat and Fiddle - Macclesfield start upto the pub (which is now closed) and turned around in the pub car park and back down to Macclesfield.
On the way up I went through 2 average speed cameras and obviously the same on the return - does anyone know how the averaging works -ie do the average speed cameras only "work" for the whole route where I would gone through another 3 or 4 on the way to Buxton before my average calculated or could I be done for exceeding 50mph average just between the two said cameras?
Thanks.
Nick.

Could be some, any or all of them, that's the trouble. Pairing up could be 1 & 3, 2-5, 1-4 or any random pair on an uninterrupted bit of road.

Is the correct answer, of course we'll now get a big discussion about the fact the cameras are rear facing (for bikes) and the old section that used to clause problems if you cut onto the old road.

Just to add to the question: can a single camera ping you or only across a pair? Thanks smile

I'd love to know how you average one number.

I wasn't sure if they had the ability to operate as both an average or a one off ping...thanks for your reply all the same.

Not currently, but these bloody things keep getting cleverer.

At the moment Gatsos, truvelos and a couple of others can ping you for a specific speed at a moment in time.

Average cameras work over distance and need at least two readings to get an average. That's why I find it hilarious watching the idiots bomb last, then slam their brakes on at each camera. How do they think averages work?

Set the cruise control at 60 in a 50 and away you go. Never let me down yet.

I have the same approach however a colleague asked the same question and I wasn't going to commit to an answer because it wouldn't surprise me if they could multi-task.

The answer I did give was 'don't speed past them'...

Whereas I would have said, "Don't speed between them."

Having been reprimanded for an average speed of 58 mph on the Wildbourclough stretch, I can certainly say that they average your speed past the cameras, not between them frown

Eh? That sentence contradicts itself surely!

No, average speed cameras work out your average speed between two or more cameras.

Well, I assumed that they timed you between two cameras, working out your avarage speed along the stretch of road. However, what they actually do is take your speed past two cameras, add them together and halve it - so the actual average they take is your speed at two points and has nothing to do with the distance between those points.

Does that make sense?

I also assumed that as there's no street lights or above ground power cables up there, the cameras probably didn't work anyway - I was wrong about that too smile

Not up there they don't. I was driving a Volvo XC90 with a Spitfire hard top sliding a round in the boot and it was foggy in places, there's no way on earth I'm a good enough driver to average 58 MPH along that bit of road, even if I was trying to, which I wasn't.

Then they're not average speed cameras.

Avoid the first two cameras by using Ankers Lane. Drop down to Bottom of the Oven (Wildboarclough) and stay on Ankers until it rejoins the C+F just before the pub. If you've missed all previous cameras you can go whatever speed you like over Goyt's Moss - they don't calculate the average of those two. The bump before the Bosley road cut-back will probably throw you off at anything over 80 anyway. 55 on the way down to Buxton is plenty fast enough in a car.

Funnily enough Tim is sort of correct. It seems if you speed between 4 or more you're certain to get done, 3 or less and nothing happens.

they do not do that.
They time the ANPR read of your plate at each camera then divide that time into the distance between the 2 cameras.
