Bought a bike In February, sorned it, now dvla want back tax
Discussion
Hi guys,
I a bought a motorbike in February, but as I haven't yet passed my test I obviously can't ride it but also can't insure it to be able to tax i, so I sorned of. I had the confirmation email so thought all was good. Well yesterday I received a letter from the dvla with red writing on it saying I hadn't taxed the bike since I bought it, so I owe them for the bank tax. Now is only £6 so not the end of the world, but I'll then have to rresorn it until I pass my test (got my test tomorrow by coincidence). Is it worth ringing them tomorrow, and hope they find a record of me sorning it (which I'm guessing they probably won't). Or do I just chalk in down to experience, pay the 6 quid, sorn it then tax it when I pass and insure it, and then just remember to do a tax check after sorning in the future?
Cheers
Gareth

Did you check the DVLA online site after you'd sorned the bike to verify it was on the system correctly?
(I suspect I already know the answer to that one!
"Hindsight is a wonderful thing but.........." )
Do you still have the confirmation email?
If yes then It's not going to hurt to get in touch with the DVLA and point out that they've sent the email at the time and give them the details of the email (who sent it, when etc., etc.)
Even if you don't still have the email it's probably still worth getting in touch with them and letting them know as a point of principle.
If they won't accept what you say then you have to consider if the matter is worth your time and effort to argue it for the amount involved.
Plenty on here would argue it to the end of the Earth and spend hundreds of pounds to be proved right, just for the point of principle, even if the amount involved is only £6.
Others on here would say that for that little amount, life's just too short to have the aggravation in your life.
At the end of the day, it all depends on how strongly you feel about the issue.
Are you aware of how many cases/situations the DVLA deals with on a daily basis?
Your case is just one of thousands that they deal with everyday, and unfortunately, some will slip through the net.
You're criticising a massive organisation dealing with hundreds of thousands of cases every year for not being competent at ensuring your bike was sorned, but you were only dealing with a single case (your own), and (I suspect), you've also failed to ensure that the bike was correctly on the system as being sorned after you had the confirmation email.
Yes it's their job to ensure it goes on the system, that's what they get paid to do, but it makes sense, and is easy enough, to check it for yourself as well for peace of mind.
Never assume anything in life! When it comes to Vehicle tax/sorn/MOT/insurance, always check their status on-line just in case!
At the end of the day, the DVLA is run by Human beings, and unfortunately, Human Beings make mistakes!
It would be quite interesting to see how all the people on here who complain about the DVLA would cope doing the job that the DVLA do.
Apparently, they wouldn't make a single mistake ever!

We checked that yesterday and it comes back as untaxed and nor sorned. Its incredible how a agency can be so badly run....

Lol.Yeah I'm on my phone, so autocorrelation turned tomorrow into tortoise. Lol.
I can understand making mistakes with paper because that's dealt with by humans, but I sorned it online. So it must be a computer brain fact. I couldn't do it with the new keeper supplement, so was a bit cheeky and waited a week for the v5 to come back, then did it. I've still got the confirmation email, so I've got the reference number and who sent i, which came through instantly so I'm assuming it's a automatically generated one.
I'm not so bothered about the 6 pound
I'm a bit worried about the continuous insurance rules meaning that because it wasn't taxed or sored and wasn't insured I could be liable for that aswell.

Dorset police are running a campaign " No Excuses ", it strikes me that sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Are you aware of how many cases/situations the DVLA deals with on a daily basis?

Any bets on it having been SORNed on the old v5c doc ref or a reminder in the vendor's name, so cancelled when the keeper change went through?
That was my first thought, but isn't the reference number on the new keeper supplement OP would have used to do that different to the the old keepers V5C reference number, so the DVLA should have been able to tell that it was the new keeper that SORN'ed it?EDIT: I completely misread your post! Carry on.
