Hi,

Probably a stupid question, but I'm just wondering what the council (in this case Bristol city council) actually does when they are informed of gypsies/travellers that are illegally parked on land. As in, what powers/legislation do they use?

The gov.uk website is rather unhelpful, and mostly just bashes on about how unique and misunderstood travellers are.

Also what timescale for eviction are we talking?

They attach huge nylon bags over each one, and light a gas burner under each and float the buggers away.

I watch it every year!

Depends on the land owner. Does BCC actually own the land these ruddy faced cheeky rascals with their unique and whimsical way of life have decided to enchant with their presence? If it's private land it takes a long as it takes for the land owner to give a toss which if, like many, they live elsewhere and aren't directly affected can mean weeks.
Council land can be a bit quicker but if it's anything like Basingstoke which seemed to be home to the entire 3.14key community of the UK a couple of years ago, the council will do bugger all of any consequence.....in fact that's not fair. First on their list was to "visit the site to ensure there are no welfare or Health and Safety issues".
After that I believe it's a fourteen day process to get the buggers threatened with court, which means they usually up sticks and fk off after 13days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds.
And whatever happens just pray BCC do a better job than Basingstoke Borough Council who, apparently, successfully pursued an eviction from a site alongside the A30 but forgot to include the other side of the road so the happy go lucky tinkers simply dragged their quaint, rustic caravans across the road to the opposite verge. Genius.

We have recently had a bunch of pikies on council land. They were immy served a 30 day notice to leave which according to my plod neighbour is standard practice, at least in our area.
They left after two days.

The council can get a court order to expel them but it usually takes a few weeks.

The court orders have a limited horizon and they will be back when it expires

It has been happening for years in this same field and few others, they get evicted, move on to the next field and the process starts again all through the summer.

a few years back a local, faced with "visitors" on his field, walked round the vans pouring petrol on them from a jerry can, then stood with a match giving then one min to leave,

takes nerve but it worked,

others have paid them to leave.

any news reports or evidence of this? BS I think.

As much as most people dont like them, there is no way I would do that and could not support anyone doing that. Thats just stupid and dangerous and totally out of proportion. Arson is one of the lowest and most dangerous stty things to do.

Not according to my mate who used that term on our local town Facebook page.

He got taken to the police station and interviewed as they had received a complaint from 'a member of the public'.

However he just refused to answer questions and they released him.

I don't think you understand some land owners then. A local one around here got a bunch of lads, some tractors, and all the shotguns they could carry. The lovely people on the land who would only have left it in a better condition than they found it were given the business end of about a dozen shotguns from a tractor. They decided to leave rather quickly.

Another landowner just got a big baler (sp?) machine, and put about 8 of them on the exit of the field. They were asked nicely to move them so they could leave......

Might be the same ones who have relocated? They arrived last Thursday.

The fella with the baler did that the year before. But it wasn't over the field, but the trailers........

I've heard that my local council offers £1000 cash relocation expenses to encourage travelers to move on.
