Had a drive down the m1 today and there was loads of 'workforce in road slow - 40' on the announcement boards and everyone still did 70 odd mph, i dont frequent the motorway very often do they not enforce these limits or something as if a camera van was put up every driver would of been disqualified, i was doing 40 and felt like a bit of a tit as everyone was flying past

You'd love J15 -19...22 miles of 50mph average speed SPECS.

Which part of the M1 has a limit of 40?

The ones you're talking about are advisory speeds, not enforceable.

I'm honestly surprised anyone would not know this, given its always been the case.

Was it on a managed motorways section or just a unenforceable advice sign on a matrix?

Just on signs on a matrix board saying workforce in road then 40 underneath

So as a bit of a motorway virgin how does one distinguish between advisory speed limits and ones you should adhere to

TSRGD Section 11 and Schedule 2 mandate that a regulatory speed limit sign must be placed within a red circle.

Therefore any matrix sign should look this.

If not, it's advisory.

However, although the signs are advisory, in the event of an incident or crash, the authorities will take a dim view of anyone that did not observe or act on the advice.

So proceed but with caution
