I was driving along a dual carriage way in a chain of car cruising at between 80-90 mph. Then out of the blue, the grey BMW 5 series in front put on his Police Slow sign in the back window before speeding off and pulling over another car quite a bit further down the road.

Despite myself breaking the speed limit, can I presume this was a sincere gesture by a friendly copper for me not to speed up as he did, or can I expect a letter in the post in the next two weeks!?

No you will not receive a letter. It's just a friendly warning.

its just the coppers being dicks, you should have stood your ground and maintained your speed

Most probably an attitude test that you passed having heeded the warning!

I had something sort of similar a few years ago on the A1 in North Yorks, was in a group of cars maintaining a fair speed in the outside lane when I spotted an unmarked car, pulled in and eased off while the others sped off, couple of minutes later they passed me with the officer on the passenger side making eye contact and a "tut tut" gesture as they passed. Further up towards Scotch Corner they had 2 pulled over.

you were breaking the limit, but an indicated 80-90, is probably means you were only just hovering around the prosecution limit and is fairly normal motorway speed
He just didn't want you or anyone else to take off after him and end up getting in the way

As others have said above.

Basically a kind gesture to let you know it's CID.

I've never seen this sign, anyone got a picture of one in use?

Ah, okay. I've never seen one in the wild. Although I guess Walter Mittys could easily have similar set-ups...

Pretty sneaky because behind blackout glass you can see it until they've switched it on

Some times if you have been a very good boy the LED sign says "THANK YOU" as they go past .

They are more advanced than a stand LED scrolling sign. They fold away and rise up at a push of a button and you select the message on the computer.

Some of them are also stored in a folded position , and don't pop up or down into the rear windscreen until they're activated.

We used to have a maroon Sierra Saphire Cosworth 4x4 on our traffic division. The only clue most people got was when we stuck a magnetic blue light onto the roof and shot off after them.

I remember losing one of those in an E36 M3 GT. Most satisfying. Local knowledge is everything. biggrin

They got me a few weeks later with a camera. Fair play. smile
