Sorry if it's been asked before but I try and avoid this section as much as I try to avoid real bibs out in the real world
Spotted on a number of TrafPol cars, a hairdryer looking thing mounted on the roof, drivers side towards the rear, facing backwards, with the word 'PIPS' on it

Is was gonna ask that too...

Some strange reason so far only really noticed them on cars around the Mansfield Road area of Nottingham as well?

Up my way as well, seen a few parked up, but saw one close up today, on a silver, but stickered up, Skoda estate

Its an anpr scamera. Same cameras as used in Trafficmaster...Pips.

it's an ANPR...(not a scamera)...

It automatically runs the registration plates of passing vehicles through the police national computer to see if they are stolen, wanted, untaxed,uninsured, possibly driven by criminals etc...

Top piece of kit..

PIPS Technology, they make all the ANPR stuff & the Trafficmaster systems which are all similar

A police car round our way has a PIPS ANPR like device mounted on the roof on the driver's side. Could this be a hairdryer?
