This has got me confused. Heading into the southbound tunnel I came off the A193 roundabout and down onto the A19 (50mph) entrance to the tunnel where this small sign shocked me by lighting up as i was within roughly the distance this image is at:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.997411,-1.484746...

It says 30mph and has a speed camera symbol on it. I braked pretty hard but passed the sign at 36 odd, now does anyone know if there's actually a camera where this sign is and if it's even legally enforcable given how small it is and lights up? The tunnel in this direction is 40 so it can't be referring to the signs within the tunnel, but i didn't spot any visible cameras passing this sign so wonder what it's even for.

Go back up that road a bit and you'll find a 30 limit sign at the entry to the slip road that I think you used to exit the "roundabout". Presence of street lights is also a hint.

The signs are clear in one view on Google, but have been turned round in another.

Yeah that does go down to 30mph, you should be slowing down any how's as your approaching the toll booths ,and you never know what kamikaze fool is gonna pull off that slip road like they've got right of way, NO speed camera there I'm aware of, it's 40mph in the southbound tunnel.

If there was a camera north or south I wouldn't have a license !

I love the new toll booth system going south, it's like a 10 way drag strip into 2 lanes

There's of those near us - lights up (I've only ever seen other vehicles trigger it obvs) with a big pic of a camera and a reminder of the limit - it doesn't take pics or issue fines though. Very much doubt you'll get a ticket.

Yes. There are only ever cameras at the exact spot that there is a speed camera sign.

Cheers guys. Seems you are right whoever said there's 30 signs coming off the roundabout. Still think it's a cheeky sign!

Why is it a cheeky sign? It lit up because you were speeding and it worked as you slowed down.

Because there isn't a speed camera there and it tells you there is.

Have heard of people being told off by the Tyne Tunnel people for speeding though, whether they're using a speed gun, or watching the cameras I don't know though, that's just while in the tunnel though.

Resurrecting this old thread as I've recently become a more frequent user of the tunnel.

Does anyone know if cameras are present (North or South) and if they have issued any fines etc?

My colleague that drives through there like a bat out of hell daily hasn't received a fine.

The pub lawyer talk is that it's a private road, though it's usually best to believe the opposite with those chaps.

There are no speed cameras as such and it's not a private road but speed and RTRs in addition to the tunnel regulations are enforceable by police under the Tyne Tunnels Byelaws 2010 and evidence from the CCTV system can be used as evidence. All of the 30mph sections of the A19 and feeder roads north and south of the actual tunnels fall under the byelaws.

Two people got suspended jail terms, fines and driving ban for racing through the tunnel last year. Think that's an exception though as you can clearly see what they were doing. If you're few miles over the speed limit, unless you're doing stupid stuff like changing lanes I doubt they'll notice much.

There may be something in the byelaws but not sure

I'm through there twice a day and have been for almost ten years now and never have I seen any speed cameras within the tunnel, or either side of it.

No Cameras in the Tunnel but there are average speed cameras after northbound for the silverlink roundabout works.

Not in relation to illuminated signs at tunnel
