I just went on the DVLA site to check the points record that they have is correct. Whilst on there I took a look at the categories section and notes that there are restrictions on each class
01 Eyesight Correction

Now, I wear glasses full time and have since I was a rug-rat. My question is - How do DVLA know this? I have never made any medical declaration to DVLA and never been asked any medical related questions.

Cue the tin-foil hat remarks.

I probably have the same, it was on the forum that I filled in when I applied for my provisional all those years back, I would guess that you'd have done the same when first applying and ticked the box on the form

if you were wearing glasses on your driving test it would have been noted down

Because your driving test examined wasn't blind as a bat.

No, no, no, no, no. They're spying on you. They're in the walls.

I went tot he site and checked mine as well. I have category 01 against all my entitlements as well, however i have never worn glasses. I then checked my actual licence and it is on there as well. After ringing them up, they said I could pay for a replacement licence or wait until mine expires and send in a cover to to have it removed. I have a feeling the DVLA fked up (when don't they!) when they either changed my paper licence for a card or during one of my address changes. They did however tell me that just because it says that I need to wear glasses, it does not mean that I have to if I do not need to. With them being thick as 2 short planks, they could not tell me why they would need to have the category on there as from their answer it is optional whether you adhere to it.

Funnily enough I noticed the same. When I passed my driving test at 17 I didn't wear glasses and my eyesight was good enough to pass the test. Subsequently it has deteriorated a bit and I now always wear glasses to drive, but how do the DVLA know this. Maybe I ticked a box when I applied for a photocard on change of addresses, but I can't remember doing this.

The 01 information code is there to indicate that the holder of the licence may require eye sight correction. This information can be useful to know depending on the circumstances in which a driver has been stopped.

If a driver has a restriction that they must wear eye sight correction when driving then they will have code 121 (restricted to conditions specified in the Secretary of State’s notice) on their licence.

If you wear glasses in the photo you send them for you photo card they will add it on.

As CAT says it's an info code that means you may need to wear glasses/contact lenses, unfortunately some officers believes it means you must wear them. As long as you can read a standard numberplate at 20.5 m in good light then you'll be fine.
