If your dad has a power of attorney he can do it all.

It sounds as if your old firm has been subject to an inervention by the SAR (solicitors reguation authority).

More info here http://www.sra.org.uk/intervention/. The chap who has the papers is simply a place you ocan go and get your papers, he has no mandate to act for you (links links on ablve page).

You have to find a new solicitor quick and instruct him to prepare a power of attorney for your father to act for you. This makes your father your agent for the transaction so he is able to do what you need to do to complete the transaction. In effect all he needs to do is sign the documents. As you are buying, there is little chance of your father spending your money on cocaine and hookers, because the mortgage advance will be paid direct to the solicitors who can only release it to the seller (unless they want the mortgage company round their necks). It sounds as if you have no exchanged contracts yet, so it may be that your father is only needed to sign the contract and you can deal with the mortahge deed and transfer when you are back from your trip.
