Looking for some advice on below.

We are a colouring products company.

We would like to buy some colouring books and copy them for internal testing of new colouring products.

The designs will not be used for sales or promotional activities and won't be used outside the R & D facility.

It's unlikely any one would ever know we are doing this but just wanted to know the legal position on this.

Would we be infringing copyright ?

Thanks

Yes.

Buy multiple copies of the books or get a licence from the publisher,

Technically maybe - but the chances of any action being taken are highly unlikely.

what is a colouring product that needs a colouring book to test it?
Unless you are automating colouring in using AI then surely a blank piece of paper will work? smile

Are you refering to pencils / pens - in hich case the biggest testing requriement is surely quality of paper to prevent bleed-through / to see how the colours react to the paper - in which case copying won't help either...

most intrigued as to what you produce that requires testing by copying a colouring book smile

and yes it is illegal unless the images are copyright free, and even then there may be copyright in the assembly of the images into the book...

Thanks for your replies guys.

For AKirk, nothing sinister.

There is a growing consumption of Adult colouring books worldwide, thats colouring books for grown ups as opposed to porno colouring.

As you would imagine they are not your regular children's stuff but very complicated intricate designs.

We are developing a range of products specially for use with these designs hence my question.

Is it infringement, most likely.

Are you going to get sued, unlikely if it's something relatively obscure i.e., nothing mainstream from Disney, Marvel etc

Just think how many reproduction posters of classic movies and bands are printed every year.

I recently got a rare poster I have reprinted for a mate as it's not readily available and sells for a small fortune.

The printers could not have cared if i'd got 5 or 5000 copies done.

I had no sinister thoughts smile
more that I assumed that the only thing you could use with a colouring book would be the medium used to colour it in! - ink pens / pencils / crayons / etc. etc.
with any of those, I would have expected the main need for testing would be the paper - and if you are copying a design, you are testing the design, not the paper - but then you may have come up with something else, so don't feel you need to say! - and agree, a very popular thing now smile
