Last year while I was driving home from work, someone fell while crossing the road in front of my car, (I saw them starting to cross and stopped in plenty of time, leaving at least a 10 yard gap between my car and them), long story short, a month later I got a call from the police saying a complaint had been made against my driving. I talked to a police officer friend who said he reckoned the person who fell would be probably just be looking for a compensation claim.

Fast forward another few weeks and I received a solicitor's letter looking for compensation on behalf of the third party. Both mine and the third party's police statements confirmed that there was no contact between my car and the third party. On solicitor's advice I informed my insurance of the situation.

As of now my insurance company has confirmed the case has been closed, they had some correspondence with third party's solicitor who won't be perusing the claim any further.

The issue now is that my insurance company have told me that I've an accident recorded against me on the insurance database which I have to declare on any future insurance quotes. How can this be correct and fair? There was no accident, the claim was totally spurious.

not entirely clear, the won't be pursuing it any further, but is that because the insurer have paid out, or because they have given up without any compensation ?

They've given up, there's been no payout.

If the insurance company refuse to correct the database you'll need to ask the insurance ombudsman to intervene,

When my insurance company say that this has been recorded as an accident, is that just on their own internal database or is there a central database for all insurers for this? The information below from the MID website seems to suggest it's just in my insurer's database.

MID said:
The minimum information held on the MID is the vehicle registration mark (VRM), duration of insurance, the name of the Insurer, the policy number, as well as the name, address and age of the policyholder and details of any named drivers on the policy. Other information relating to the type of insurance cover may be included (Class of Use, Permitted Drivers) , along with an indication of whether the policy allows the policyholder to Drive Other Vehicles.

The make and model of the vehicle is usually included, depending on whether the insurance company has specified this information.

The database does not hold details of claims or accidents or No Claims Bonus.

There is a separate system called CUE accessed and updated by all insurers.
