I was just rear ended a few hours back whilst stationary at traffic lights waiting to turn right. A car smashed in to the left side of my rear bumper and as I got out of the car the driver sped off by turning left. I don't have a witness as no one else was on the road at the time.

Rang the police and explained what happend; they gave me a CAD reference number and told me to go to a police station to report this within 24 hours - what happens next? Will call my insurers tomorrow but how will I prove this happpend!?!? I am pretty sure as it was 2.30am this person must have been under the influence of alcohol and hence why he/she drove off.

My rear bumper is severley damaged :-(

If you have the reg of the other car then the corresponding damage on the car will prove it happened. If not, you can't prove anything.

As your occupation is a Private Investigator / Detective you will be better placed than us to find out all the details.

A good reason to be in bed at 2.30am to miss all the piss heads.

Corresponding damage paint etc. you sure you're a gumshoe?

And how come you didn't get back in your car and follow him whilst reporting the incident. We could have had another pisshead off our roads.

Because my wife wouldnt let me chase him in case he attacked us - I know in hindsight I should have ignored her!

I'm not being rude but if you are a private detective, surely you should know all of the tricks of the trade to deal with something like this or am I way off the mark?

There are different types of detectives in the trade. I focus more on the corporate sector and financial markets rather than out and out detective work such as criminal activity or extra marrital affairs!

Gosh never expected replies like these from PH tbh thought there maybe some helpful replies forthcoming.

Hey ho - police have already given me information - the car was a hire car and I have been hit by a tourist! I can see this is going to be really messy!

At least the hire car will be insured and with the police being involved and a hit and run you should be ok with the third party insurance admitting liability.Good luck

I doubt very much that the police have given you any information at all.

They certainly would not tell you anything at all about the owner of a vehicle from a reg no (which I'm presuming you got), let alone who the car was hired to.

Your insuramce will sort it out very easily with the hire company's insurers. There's little you can do, I usually advise people very strongly to. It play Nancy Drew in these matters, in your case, I'll say the Hardy Boys. You will only fk it up.

Elderly LR for urban driving makes more sense as the years go by. Can you get one with a winch on the back to fend off interlopers? Farm jack accessory has possibilities.

this is a situation where a dash / multi cam fitting would pay for itself. but seems to be a lot of people on this forum that doesnt believe they are necassary.

Why? If he's got the registration number, which he seems to have, then that'll be good enough.
