Annoyingly, my vehicle tax runs out on the 31st July but my car doesn't go into storage until the 2nd August. For reasons of ferrying stuff around, etc I can't overcome this.

'Chancing it' is not an option either due to the proliferation of ANPR in this area (and obviously because it's wrong, ahem).

I'm thinking the cheapest way round is to pay it by DD and then cancel/SORN straight away on the 2nd which should result in only needing to pay a month.

Anyone done this? If it works the £25 ish is far cheaper than either the fine or cost of alternative transport options.

As soon as you set it up, whichever way you choose to do it, the car is taxed.

If you actually want the cheapest way then buy 12 months tax (either online or by DD one off payment). Then cancel and you will get 11/12s back.

There is a surcharge which you pay if you do anything else other than buy 12 months which is not refundable when you Sorn.

As an aside I still think the payments are a bit wonky. I've got a reminder in front of me.

buying 12 months costs £180
buying 2 x 6 months online( not by DD) costs £18 per year in surcharges
buying monthly by DD costs £9 per year in surcharges
buying 6 monthly by DD costs £9 per year in surcharges

Not sure I really understand that.

Cheers. I don't want to go down the refund route as I won't be here to receive the cheque, so may try setting up a DD and then cancelling it.

You don't need to cancel the direct debit if you just SORN the car the requests for payments cease.

I know that's the case in theory but would you trust them not to take the next payment, and, if they did, how easy would that be to get back.

So, I SORN mine and then cancel the DD. Belt and braces.

Can you book it for an MOT on the 2nd, do your drive early in the morning and cancel once it's safely there? Use a Halfrauds Autocentre obviously so as not to cause inconvenience to a proper garage.

Perfectly legal and means DVLA don't get a month of cash for two days of use.

OP says he needs to ferry things about in those 2 days so how will he do this on the way to and from the MOT station?

Silly suggestions leaving him at risk of a fine for the sake of a max. outlay of £42.

Perfectly legal other than he's not driving to an MoT centre and having an MoT done?

I would certainly not just chuck a SORN in on the 2nd or 3rd... no sir.
