Am I likely to encounter any issues getting an MOT on a 1969 LHD car fitted with a speedo showing only Kph?

Per http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_670a.htm I can't see any explicit reference to any requirement to show Mph, only for the "speed" to be clearly legible.

It shouldn't be a problem for the MOT, just be sure to inform the tester what units the odometer is reading in.

It's always wise to use the official testers manual for reference as this is updated more frequently:

If it isn't listed in the "Reasons for Rejection" column, it isn't a fail.

KPH-only speedos are against 1986 C&U regs, don't know about before, but that's never checked anyway. Mr MOT doesn't care one jot. For import, if it's under 10yo, it has to be dual-marked, but older there's no problem.

Sounds like a throwaway comment - but (as an owner of an LHD vehicle with an odometer reading in km) it's not... smile

yes & thumbup

As others have alluded to, an MoT Pass does not exclude a breach of the C&U Regs as one drives away from the testing station (or anywhere else, if one meets a DVSA testing point or a committed traffic occifer on one's travels)... wink

Had an '89 CB400 import with a kph speedo. Just put some stickers on marking 30,50 and 70 MPH and MOT man was happy.
I have no idea about the law btw, this was just suggested at the bike shop and it seemed to do the trick...

I've never bothered, and no tester's ever made an issue of it.

My Jap import has an odometer in both but when you actually look at it, the marks don't line up or make sense and you cannot work out which is what. It has never failed on the MOT test for this (other things but not the odometer biggrin) but they keep marking the 'mileage' in the miles box when it is actually in km's so my MOT things says it has done around 194000 miles but it is 194000 km. Only a problem if I wanted to sell it.
I use a Sat Nav to keep me in the speed limits...

I understood that (if you do in fact need an mph speedo for whatever test you are getting) you can just put on little stickers onto the face of the speedo indicating some mph numbers. Those stickers may fall off over time.

When I got a car with KPH markings imported - I had to get MPH markings for the import/type-approval - but not for the MOT.

Fergus, I've just had a 1968 LHD car MOT'd with a KPH only speedo without any problems. Good luck and hope it passes.

For a car over 10yo, MOT is all that's needed on import - no need for CoC or IVA or any other checks.

It's not an issue with the tester, more of a convenience for the vehicle presenter. The MOT mileage record will look a bit odd if the tester doesn't change the units from miles to Km and a subsequent tester does a year later.

Not that it makes any odds, as the vehicle presenter should check the details on the certificate and things like incorrect mileage can be changed at the testing station within 7 working days and replacement documents issued. After 7 days it's extremely difficult to get such details changed as it needs to be done by the DVSA.

Testers are not worried about speedo`s or mileage.I had an old LHD car for years, the tester wrote KMs in the miles box.I`ve also taken normal cars for MOT`s that have no mileage showing because of blown bulb, digits faulty etc.The tester just puts "mileage unrecorded" or what ever in the box.

My ol' Saab 900 had the same mileage for four MOTs, then at the next had 40k less. No issue at all.
