Got pulled the other week in the shopping hack and it transpires I overlooked getting it reinsured a few months back, totally honest mistake (my toys a new M6 so hardly worried about £200 for ins). Anyhow, officer was very pleasant and after I failed to find the email paperwork via my phone which I though I had he wrote a ticket out for no insurance and said to email him when I got home if I did actually have the paperwork. Drove straight home and realised what an idiot I'd been so immediately insured the car - 26 minutes after the time on the ticket.
Fine came through and ended up with points. Unfair in my view as never drive without the necessary but ignorance or whatever it's called is no excuse so fair enough, just mega annoyed at myself and my no longer clean licence.

Moving forward I was watching a channel 5 police show last night and some biker got tugged for a small plate and whilst at the road side the officer checked his details and he had no insurance. At this point the officer sad he would give the rider a short while to arrange insurance otherwise he would be prosecuted and the bike impounded..... WTF is that all about and why was I not given that option...?

Any views as to contesting it or just shut up and get on with life..? smile

Are you sure he didn't just let him insure it at the roadside but still reported him? I have done that before. Family on holiday hundreds of miles from home. No insurance. Let them sort it out immediately at road side but still reported.
You could contest it, but like you said...at the time of the ticket, you had no insurance! What would your claim be?

ETA. If you have no insurance, you can expect to have your car seized. You're lucky if you don't. There's no duty to allow you to insure it at the roadside.

If i remember rightly, the guy on the bike was given the chance to sort insurance at the roadside so that his bike wouldn't get seized and he could ride it home.

He was getting reported for no insurance anyway.

Please enlighten me where the holes are!?

At the time I had just sold my HSV, brought new 650 BMW then 3 weeks later swapped out into the M6 so in between that lot I overlooked insuring the shed. My fault I know just wondered if people actually got to correct their mistake there and then or is it always black and white.

If that's the case then fair play as no double standards going on. End off really.

I think if you look at this objectively you will probably agree that it isn't unfair at all.

Nothing to do with fancy motors you've had or your reason why you don't think insurance is that important

It's your story that a police officer was satisfied that you were definitely uninsured, so gave you a fixed penalty not a 7 day producer, then let you drive it home uninsured and told you to email him if you could find your insurance documents.

You drove without insurance. 6 points + £300. Mistake or not, it happened.

I mistakenly stabbed and dismembered three prostitutes in a fit of absent mindedness. Do people think I will get into any trouble? I mean, honest mistake and all that.

I would presume that they let the biker insure on the spot so he could ride home rather than them seizing it.

You weren't insured at the time you were stopped so what you did afterwards and how fast you did it is largely academic. If you'd had an accident at that time, or any time since it had expired, there would've been no cover.

Sorry but you're bang to rights.

Apart from this instance of a few months, of course...

Yes, it does strike as a tad unfair that he knowingly let you drive home uninsured, rather than confiscating your uninsured car and getting yet another uninsured driver off the streets immediately.

And who knows how long you would have remained uninsured had you not been pulled over...

I'm with the OP. If you drive and insure big expensive and flash cars, you should be allowed to drive crappy cars uninsured. rolleyes

Where are Flemke and the sycophants? They usually leap to the defence of downtrodden individuals whenever there is a suggestion that the story is made up?

Or is that just for me?
