Just heard a smash and found one of the local kids has put a stone through the drivers window. Mother apoligised, said she'd sort it but doesn't have home insurance. Advice?

I expect I'd get it fixed and give her the bill.

I would phone police and get the incident logged so no backing down when they get landed with a bill.

Ask her if she has cash, or can get to a cashpoint.

I can all but guarantee you that when you get a quote to replace it, and it is a multiple of what she thought that things will not be so clear cut.

Astounded one can insure against one's children's misdemeanours...whatever happened to accountability? Call the police.

That IS accountability - I think it's a great idea.

Is not having house insurance a common thing? I thought it was pretty essential to have house insurance as its probably the biggest investment one will ever make. Unless rented of course.

Erm, insuring myself against any random (costly) acts my child gets up to is the bloody definition of being accountable.

At least this way, nobody is unduly financially 'punished' by the costly actions of a child

It costs me about €60 per year. Fantastic piece of mind.
This does seem to be a great idea, im surprised it hasnt cottoned on over in England as its another way for insurance to make money and probably less time in court trying to claim damages.

No. Accountability is teaching your kids that THEY are accountable for their own actions. Making the scrote work a paper round (or whatever) to pay for the repairs makes more sense than insuring against your own offspring being vandals.

You have glass cover? Get her to pay the excess....

Best solution all round

It'll be a rental.

Watch Judge Judy. She covers these types of incidents very well.

Right, having just spent over an hour clearing as much of the glass up as I can, I can add more detail. The local kids decided that playing tennis with stones would be a good way to spend a summer's evening, and my car was right in the firing line (annoyingly I hardly ever use that particular space and had a day off work so wouldn't usually be there). Culprit was a little girl about 5-6 crying her eyes out, so at least it wasn't some scrotes who did a runner and the mother has promised to pay, with her saying it could be about £400 to fix.

Actually not even sure if I have that, but wouldn't I lose my NCD or see premiums go up, especially as my renewal is on the 27th? Need to get something done urgently as I need the car for work, and seeing as my only solution was to tape a binbag over I just hope it doesn't rain tonight or when I have to drive to work tomorrow

Kids huh? The loveable little scamps rolleyes

I was just searching for them - I don't care if it's a new or secondhand one as long as it stops the rain coming in. Downside is I'm at work for the rest of the week so no one around to sign for it
