3 points and £100 fine. Pretty sure 88 is just above the speed awareness course upper limit (which is 86))

How do you know you've been done? NIP or just past a camera van at an indicated 88? If the later you might be a bit slower than you think.

Nope had letter that states a manned observation measured me at 88, bit miffed as I honestly don't usually let it drift that high,

3 points will make virtually no difference to insurance or anything else.

£100 means shopping at Lidl instead of Tesco for a month and you'll recoup it.

Other than that it's no disaster, especially as you're unlikely to get another set of points as you don't normally go at that speed.

You don't want to be drifting in Cumbria smile

88mph on the M6 in Cumbria. I'm surprised you weren't the slowest car on the road.

Doesn't the letter tell you what you will get?

Or are they sending out preNips now. "We got you and at some point we will send you a letter and let you know what we are going to do about it"

Seems a very extravagant use of resources.

I don't know what a NIP is but it is a letter asking who was driving.

Notice of Intended Prosecution.

Others may suggest its a different form at this stage, but if they've said what speed you were driving then that's the speed they want to prosecute.

BTW this is all assuming the speed limit was 70 at the time. If it was lower due to say roadworks then the penalty will be worse.

Which Junctions between? 88 is usually considered a minimum up there

I was making progress at rate well beyond what is normally feasible further down the M6. Thought "I'm making bloody good time here". Then had a nice old gentleman in a flat cap come flying past me.

I'd estimate average speed up there to be a shade under 90. So, it's why it probably didn't feel that quick.

The only bit of the M6 i'd say that I like.

What are you talking about? How would they tell the RK what the driver will be offered when they don't know who was driving?

Are there really people with full driving licences who don't know what a NIP is?
They can't issue one to a RK for an alleged speeding offence, only the driver.
It's a S.172 request to grass on him/her (which in this case is you).
wink

See the point made by La Liga.

No help to the OP I'm afraid, but as soon as I hit Cumbria on the M6, I stick on the cruise control at a GPS indicated 70 and leave it there until I get through the legacy Dumfries and Galloway bit, then stick it back on for the A90 from Dundee to Aberdeen.

Much less stressful than trying to spot and react to vans, because they do like to target those roads (and the A9, which has a load of average speed cameras). In fact I was at a wedding up towards Inverness a month or so ago and heading home on the Sunday morning, I saw three speed enforcement vans, all parked on really straight bits where overtaking in (not very much) excess of the 60 limit pull have been prperfectly safe (albeit illegal). Even more irritating were the queue makers who chose to drive at ~45 in the 60 limits, the speed up if you had the temerity to overtake them.

Me too.

I regularly drive from N Wales to Glasgow / Edinburgh, probably 3/4 times a month.

As soon as I'm past the M55, the cruise control goes on at 77 mph, to save worrying about mobile cameras. I don't deactivate it again until I'm past the M55 on the return.

The number of people I've seen pulled by traffic cars isn't worth doing otherwise....
