Taking the motives at face value (i.e. not just an excuse to generate revenue), I'm all for this.

I get how these cameras would catch red light jumpers but can't see how they would catch those who speed through green lights at junctions.

Is this possible or is it just BS to prevent those motorists who would normally jump a red light from 'hooning' it through a green light.

Been around for donkeys, work like a gatso for speed and loops for crossing on red.

Photo in paper is of a radar on top of lights which is for traffic movements for the light sequence.

It'll be useful for catching drivers that accelerate through the amber.

I know someone (no, not me) who learned to their cost that red light cameras are also speed cameras. A rude awakening...

this is why I brake heavily for any camera on a stick, just in case. Much safer.

There is a very famous Red Light camera with a 'speed on green' capability close to where I live. it is on the Holes Bay Road dual carriageway approach to Poole. It was introduced in 2009 and made the best part of £1m from the 'speed on green' in the first year of operation. After a great deal of bad publicity it stopped the 'speed on green' enforcement in 2011. The enforcement as a red light camera continues but with very few offenders if the records can be believed. There is a short period of time after the lights turn red before prosecution i.e the recommendation is 1 to 1.9 seconds = Driver Awareness Course if eligible, 2 to 2.9 seconds = FPN, above 3 seconds = court hearing.

Incidentally there is no speed detection whilst it is on the red light phase.

This would imply you're always speeding (otherwise why bother braking?) - not sure I'd class that as 'much safer'...

I get the attempted pun that sudden heavy braking for a camera on a stick could be as dangerous, if not more so, than a minor speed infraction.

Ha ha he he laugh gawf chortle.

But, it falls flat. Because if you're going so fast you need to to brake heavily, then you are in fact not doing the driving thing properly: both in terms of speed and observation.

I don't need to brake heavily, I do it just in case.

All the red light Gatsos on the A12 in/out of London have been replaced by the ones as above which also double as speed cameras.

Yes there is a host of cameras that do red lights and speed. Despite what has been said above most of them measure speed on red as well.

Have you any evidence of a driver being prosecuted for speeding whilst the lights were on the red phase?
Dorset Police said "Following Home Office Type Approval for ‘Speed on Green’ safety cameras, the red light safety cameras which previously only monitored vehicle non-compliance with a red signal at traffic lights, will now also be used to enforce compliance with the speed limit of vehicles crossing junctions on a green signal."

has the type approval been given to enforce speed on the red phase?

You must be joking!

More and more people in cars are either speeding up as fast as they can if they see the amber light come on or just completely ignoring a light that is already on red and driving straight through it!

As far as I'm concerned, unless it's to let an emergency vehicle get past, driving through a red light should be an automatic 12 month ban from driving!

People need to learn that the amber light means: "STOP!" (unless your front wheels are already over the stop line or it would cause an accident to stop).

An amber light doesn't mean: "Put your foot down! - You can still beat the red!"

So if you are traveling at a legal 40 mph and you're 50 feet shy of the stop line, if the light goes amber you should brake as hard as you can?
