Would any of our esteemed legal bods care to try and explain how this is even possible?

Short version:

Daughter moves out 26 years ago, no reconciliation since.
Mother leaves £486k to charity.
Daughter comes out of the woodwork, disputes will, Judge AGREES and awards her £164k... WTAF???

Maybe it's a cause of the daughter claiming benefits, although, why that should make proceeds come from an estranged parent is beyond me!

Google the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 and that will go a long way to establishing a basic understanding and an answer to your question....
