There is a 40 dual carriageway about 2 minutes from my house. No one does it as it used to be a 70 but that is by the by. Anyhow, never ever been scammers down that road, so today was first time I've seen the police there. Hiding behind an advertising sign with his gun.

Not a clue what speed I was doing but would probably guess I was over the limit. Not sure if these cameras need a few meters, but I did an emergency stop for avoidance of doubt so the hazards come on automatically. Probably about 300-400m's away from the guy and I saw him early.

So I then start off and back to 40 and he continues to keep his gun on the car. I was not stopped, but a Zafira about 10 seconds behind me was then flagged down as I guess he did not slow down.

When I came back the other way 10 minutes later I went down the side road and there was a marked car and they appeared to be pulling people ver and giving them tickets.

Do you think it's likely I'll get a ticket in the post or may have escaped as I wasn't pulled over at the time?

I am not 100% sure but if a policeman was at the side of the road with a speed gun then I would think that another policeman down the road would stop you to issue a ticket. If you were caught with a camera van with blacked out windows on the side of the road they would just send you a ticket in the post.

I wouldn't worry. If they were pulling people, they would have stopped you then and there. And as you were obviously paying attention, they would be less inclined to stop you for a tad of excess speed anyway. That's why it was better before the scam partnerships, more discretion.

I got caught doing about 49 in a 40. The 40 was a 60 about a year ago outside of the main village, so people still forget the new limit. Anyway, I saw the police trap, and eased off. As I went passed she noted my reg. Two long weeks of waiting, but nothing arrived in the post. Still no reason for the limit to be a 40 when for 40 years + it's been a 60.

They see you much earlier than you see them, thats why the positions are chosen. Whatever speed you were doing (if it was over) was not worth his while.

I guess it's like fishing, some fishermen take small tiny fish all day long, other fishermen see those little fish go by and don't pay them much mind, instead waiting for the nice big trophy fish to get their attention.

Why the emergency stop? Do the brakes on your car only operate on a binary "stop/go" setting?

I'm with BV on this. Can I just confirm you actually did the above?

I was ready to believe this CSB until I saw the bit about a Zafira exceeding the speed limit. That was like the thirteenth stroke of a crazy clock, which not only is itself discredited but casts a shade of doubt over all previous assertions.

I was on A12 the other day had same sort of thing, there was a police motorcycle on hard shoulder with a gun, he must have clocked me going faster than the other cars, I slowed pretty rapidly and he kept the gun on me as I passed, can these hand held guns issue tickets ? I didn't notice any other police cars further down the road.

I set off a camera when my speedo (old car, prob even more unreliable than most speedos) was reading about 32. Nothing received in the post as yet, but something might yet come (change of keeper was in progress, so the previous owner could have received the initial notice, if any was sent, and in that event it could take a while for the notice to be sent to me).

I won't complain if I do get busted. 30 in a village should mean 30 (or less). Meanwhile, on the M25 lately (northern section), the standard do not get busted if driving sensibly speed appears to be 80.

Yes they can. I received a NIP in May from the same scenario on the M11.

Similar circumstances to you last week OP: coming out of London on the A3 at Westhill where it opens up to 3 lanes for the first time; limit is 40 but 50 is common down the Tibber Corner underpass and up to the lights at Putney Heath. Police were at the far-end of the underpass, leaning over the wall with a radar gun to catch people coming down the underpass going faster than they should. Myself included.

It's been a week now and no NIP through the door, touch wood.
