Driving whilst using phone..
Discussion
Do the M25 cameras pick up these bellends? I have a decent vantage point from the cab and despite the temptation to record them and risk a fine myself, I have started honking my horn at them.I assume simply logging the plate and reporting would fall on deaf ears?
I see dozens of people doing this every single day.If traffic builds up, the numbers increase dramatically.

If you submit damning evidence to your local police station about these drivers would you expect them to process it and try to prosecute these drivers after tracking them down?
For the sake of 3rd party evidence which can be called into question, PERHAPS a small fine and penalty points depending on what the prosecution go for?
Seems like an awful waste of time and money when the police could be out there catching serious criminals

Shouldn't you be concentrating on the road ahead rather than what other drivers are up to?I see dozens of people doing this every single day.If traffic builds up, the numbers increase dramatically.

I was driving back from work yesterday, down a dual carriage way, but the traffic was 10-20 mph.
The amount of people on the other side of the road that had their phones to their ear, heads staring into their lap or blatantly tapping out a text was ridiculous. I must have gone past 20 cars and at least 10 were on their phone.
Oddly enough, the main culprits, based on my small random sample, seemed to be middle aged women.

Out of interest, did this bother you before they banned it? I'd concede that smartphones with Facebook and emails would be hard to operate whilst driving safely but cars have had phones for years before they suddenly became dangerous and moronic to use and I would have thought anyone ought to be able to manage a conversation and a car together.I see dozens of people doing this every single day.If traffic builds up, the numbers increase dramatically.

ull of these types of drivers; and the police are not dealing with them, that is the problem.

It's the tapping out texts and Facebook updates that worries me.
Exactly.Times have changed.I'm talking of people driving along looking at their phone in their lap.You may get the occasional glance up to make sure they are not going to crash if you are lucky.I had also heard tales of cameras picking up seat belt and phone offenders, hence I asked the question.

So would I, but it isn't so. Took part in a driver training thingy where you had to drive thru various hazards on an off road course whilst on your own, whilst chatting to a passenger, talking on hands free and then talking on a handheld phone. The results were consistent across about 20 of us. Little difference between on your own and with a passenger, big drop in standard whilst talking on a hands free and an even bigger drop with a hand held.

I shall figure out a way of having a side view camera I think. These are the same bellends who wander across lanes and slow down when busy focusing on their phone and then come back to reality when finished and speed off into the distance.Wash, rinse, repeat over several miles..For the sake of 3rd party evidence which can be called into question, PERHAPS a small fine and penalty points depending on what the prosecution go for?

Simply someone on a phone....probably won't be interested. If it's good evidence of dangerous/careless driving, with a good shot of the reg and driver and obvious poor standard of driving then you might get a bite. But think about it, if everyone started doing this, for phones...and then seat belts/dodgy overtakes/lights out etc, the Police would deal with nothing else. Digby said:

I'm sure they'd record it, but not "identify" it.In some cases, there might be a clear picture of a speeding driver but it might be tricky to conclusively make out if a belt wasn't being worn, or if the hand by the head was holding a phone.
The ANPR stuff would all tend to be handled by computers just reading the reg plate so I'd say detection and prosecution would be very rare.
I do remember when ANPR first appeared, and they'd nab people for tax, some people thought the cameras looked at the tax disc in the window...

I know two people who've been nabbed for no seatbelt by a manned speed enforcement van.In their cases (not all will be the same), the pictures they were sent sans belt were incredibly clear and it would have been pretty obvious had they been holding a phone to their ear.
