I went to use my car at the weekend and discovered a note from Police Scotland saying my car was unlocked and they had removed my sat nav from it and taken it to the police station. Are they allowed to do this?

How very dare they take an insecure and highly-nickable item into safe custody, to prevent it being stolen from you.

Why aren't they catching real criminals, instead of preventing crime?

They could have put it in the glove compartment or boot. They don't have the right to interfere with private property surely.

will you leave the car unlocked again?

But i don't think what the police are doing is technically legal.

I draw your attention to points 1 and 9

Peelian Principles
1. The basic mission for which the police exist is to prevent crime and disorder.

2. The ability of the police to perform their duties is dependent upon public approval of police actions.

3. Police must secure the willing co-operation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public.

4. The degree of co-operation of the public that can be secured diminishes proportionately to the necessity of the use of physical force.

5. Police seek and preserve public favour not by catering to public opinion but by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service to the law.

6. Police use physical force to the extent necessary to secure observance of the law or to restore order only when the exercise of persuasion, advice and warning is found to be insufficient.

7. Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.

8. Police should always direct their action strictly towards their functions and never appear to usurp the powers of the judiciary.

9. The test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with it.

Yeah - thieves never check the glove box.

Maybe take some responsibility for yourself and lock your car next time?

They locked the car so it would be ok. I can't be expected to take my sat nav in and out of my car every time I use it.

I intended to lock the car obviously but somehow must have failed. Also the battery was flat, perhaps this made the car open.

Now you're just having a laugh, surely?

Of course you bloody well can, how else do you think you stop it getting stolen?! I never leave mine in, never have done in god knows how many years of using one. I used to make sure I removed the suction cup marks from the screen too, when I used to use a suction mount years back.

OP, you should take this to the papers. Another case of Police Scotland incompetence.

Reactive policing - how come they can't detect thought crime like Minority Report and stop it happening in the first place?

Proactive policing - how dare they inconvenience me into having to recover my property that would quite likely have been stolen otherwise?

They should be out catching criminals instead of breaking into people's car and stealing their property. I now have to use my own time and money to get to the police station to get my property back.

Not sure how they knew, maybe just saw the nobs high. They would have locked it by pushing them down and closing the doors.

Do you have children? We need a photo for the Daily Mail to show how this act of kindness has effected the whole family.
