LPG Conversion - Trading Standards.
Discussion
I had my car converted almost 7 k ago.
I had various issues after installation. Misfires, low gas pressure etc and being new to lpg i thought it just needs setting up properly so i had a few trips (4?) back to fix various things. It still has some minor issues but i dont want to waste time sorting them so i left it until the 1st service. Occasionally it will error and switch to petrol, engine light is on for low fuel pressure bank 1 + 2 (drives ok) and it seems to lack above 5k.
Its due for its service so i chose a local one who is almost on my door step. I also ask him to check the conversion as im a bit skeptical of having to go back a few times. He found a few things and advised i contact UKLPG the governing body for gas conversions in the UK.
The email i sent to his is as follows:
I recently had my car converted at a company called XXXX. Its due for its first service so i took it to a local installer.
He has advised myself to contact you on the following points:
- The stamp in the books say that XXX is registered in XXXX, however i had the conversion done in a different premises.
- The installer on the certificate is not the person who carried out the work.
- Some of the hoses dont comply to Cop 11 standards, too thin.
- They said it was a uklpg approved installation, but its not on the database even though i have a (fake) certificate.
- XX fixed a leak whilst i was there.
Can you advise me of the next steps to take please.
Regards
Chris

So im pretty pissed, i paid £1,300 for this conversion. The guy explained at the local lpg shop that at least the system they used is a good one. Still doesnt cover the fact they are trading as a company that isnt uklpg approved and have lied to me stating they are, saying it was an official conversion etc.
I got back this email:
We have received previous complaints about this company who are not UKLPG Approved regarding misrepresentation and poor workmanship.
Unfortunately we have no jurisdiction over them and are unable to take any action. However you should raise the matter with Trading Standards who act to protect consumers. Please pass on my contact details to them as I will be pleased to assist them regarding any LPG issues.
So my question is really what can i expect when writing to trading standards?
I do not want these people to touch the car again, but i do want it running perfectly.
I havent contacted them as yet to let them know my findings. I dont want there workshop to ''disappear''
I paid my deposit for the conversion (£500) via bank transfer, could they help?

TS have undergone significant cuts in the past few years so I wouldn;t expect much help.
If teh tarder is misrepresenting himself then they could take enforcement action but it is dependent on resources/priority.
They will probably advise you to pursue the company via civil courts if you wnat money back.
You should also ntoe many TS depts do not take complaints directly but refer you to the national Citizens Advice call centre which gives advice and logs complaints for them.
