Evening all. Long story short I bought a car from a used car dealer Monday. Turns out it was a bag of nails. Returned car to dealer today as they had loaned my car to a customer and it was not available until today.

Spoke to DVLA to cancel the DD for the tax, they informed me I have to register the vehicle in my name and when I have the V5 to send it off stating I'm no longer the keeper and they will refund any tax not used.

Let's just say the returns process was not friendly and he's going to put the car in the auctions tonight so have no chance of getting the V5.

The DVLA are saying I now need to get a V62 and send it of with 25 quid, wait for the V5 and then return saying I'm not the keeper, seems a lot of hassle for the short time I owned the vehicle.

I'm think of just cancelling the DD, I know I will lose this months payment and accept that as the vehicle was used on the road for 4 days, and then doing nothing else. Is this wise or should I just get on with what the DVLA have suggested?

Thanks

Simon

If you are the current registered keeper (as presumably you paid for the road tax) then I don't understand the problem.

If the dealer paid for the road tax then it would have to be him that gets he refund.

If you are not the registered keeper, then the road tax will be null and void as soon as you become the new registered keeper. In that case the refund will be send to the previous registered keeper.

I'm not the registered keeper. The car along with the V5 was returned today. The V5 had not been completed by me or the dealer. So dealer has his car with complete V5 and I have my car with complete V5. Hope this makes sense...

Who taxed the car and who will be getting the refund?

I completely understand your dilemma.
What I don't understand is why the dealer didn't send the V5 to Swansea on Monday when you bought the car.
How did you end up with the V5, and not just the green slip?

How did you tax the car if you haven't got the V5, or New Keepers Supplement?

To clarify, the dealer gave me the entire V5 and told me to send it off, they signed and dated the green part. I gave them the V5 for mine and they said they would send it off.

I taxed the vehicle I bought on Monday and returned it today along with the V5

Why didn't you send the V5 off after taxing the new car?

The car was purchased at 5pm on Monday, I taxed it and insured it before leaving the dealer with the intention of sending the V5 off on Tuesday. Tuesday morning the car struggled to start and belched out blue smoke and did this throughout the day. I contacted the dealer on Tuesday to let them know the issue and told them I would be taking it back for a full refund and was told the car I had part exchanged was on loan to a customer and wouldn't be back until today. I went to the dealer today gave them back the car I purchased and they gave me the car I part exchanged back along with a full refund.

Ok, just wondering. Can't offer any help as I've not bought a new vehicle since the changes kicked in.

No worries. Thinking about it I'm going to cancel the DD with my bank after the first payment has gone out for this month. This means it was taxed and insured whilst I had it so I will have been legal.

I'm prepared to be educated, but how do you tax a car if you're not the registered keeper? Can anyone phone up the DVLA and tax anyone's car?

Yes you can, go on to the DVLA website and if you have the document ref from the V5 you can now tax it. You don't even need to prove it is insured. You can pay it all in one go, every 6 months and even monthly. And to be fair you could tax it at the PO with the new keeper supplement if you wanted. You never taxed your other halfs car??

I had to look it up too. You do it online with the New Keeper supplement number. No need to prove insurance anymore as that is continually checked in the background now via MID

Cancelling your DD will be a bad move.
They have a computerised system in place that will cancel the tax when they receive the V5 for owner transfer, or you fill in a form to cancel the tax.
If you cancel the DD, they will be chasing you for non payment.

I get this, but due to the system I have paid for tax for the whole of September although I bought it on the 21st. This will not be refunded and I am OK with this. The DVLA have no record that I owned the vehicle as the V5 was in my possession and then given back to the dealer with the vehicle. If I cancel the DD I will have paid for the month of September. I have taxed and insured the vehicle whilst in my possession however I did not complete the new keepers supplement due to agreeing to return the vehicle less than 24 hours after buying it. So I'm thinking I never owned it but the DVLA say I did and have to register it in my name. I can do this by getting a V62 and sending it off to them.

So not only can you tax a vehicle that is not registered to you, you can also register a vehicle that you don't own in your name by going to the Post Office and getting a V62!

Edit to add:

Due to the new system I could tax your car using my name and Bank details. If I cancelled they would chase you for unpaid tax as you are the registered keeper presumably. I am not the registered keeper of the vehicle I taxed but have paid for tax from when I purchased it, when I cancel the DD it will stop all future payments meaning that I have paid for September but it will not be taxed from October, not my concern as I don't have it anymore. I'm just trying to work out if there will be any come back if I don't do as requested and register the vehicle in my name for 4 days??

You can't tax any car that you feel like. You need a V5 or the V5C2, or a tax reminder.

The website is very easy to use and clear on that.

You don't need the V5 or V5C2 and it doesn't need to be in your name either.

You just need the latest document reference number from the V5 or V5C2 and you can pay online.

As for the OP, the DVLC or whatever they are called this week won't have a record of you owning the vehicle, unless you told them so when you paid for the tax.

If you only paid for the tax, you can cancel your direct debit and that will be the end of it, but you might have a short argument/discussion with them where they have to show that you notified them of ownership.

Yes you can, I have done it. I had the V5 not in my name and taxed the vehicle. The DVLA are relying on you to post the new keepers supplement which you would in normal circumstances. As I agreed to return the vehicle less than a day after purchasing it I didn't send it. Their website also states you can drive the vehicle immediately once you have completed the application on line.

I have an email stating the vehicle is taxed along with a payment schedule yet the vehicle is not registered to me or belongs to me.

This is what I'm hoping for although judging by the varying degree of help I got we'll see.

And just for the record I'm not trying to get out of paying the tax due, I just can't be arsed to register a vehicle that I don't own in my name and then deregister it for the sake of 4 days...
