do you compete for prizes ?
as this seems tobe onme of the areas VOSA concentrate on when looking at race transporters and horse boxes
The DVSA's guidance in this area is predominantly focused on whether or not an o licence is required and is more involved than "do you compete for prizes". The gist of the DVSA guidance is does the activity constitute a hobby as opposed to a business. It suggests that expenditure should be greater than any prize winnings or sponsorship and that the activity should have amateur status. as this seems tobe onme of the areas VOSA concentrate on when looking at race transporters and horse boxes
Having said that, it is pretty much irrelevant to your question about insurance. Contact the insurance company, explain to them what you intend to use the vehicle for and be guided by what they say.

sdp should be fine, but might me hard to get for a van, and in an case may not be cheapers than buisnness use. There might be some specialist which would do it cheaper, i've heard loon mention he has special van insurance just to carry motorbikes around
I have, but I quote "Not the type of post we wish for on the thread" means I can no longer be arsed and will be joining BV doing other stuff and sticking with the Biker Banter area, as it's fun. It's difficult cover to arrange because Insurers offering SDP use only policies are few and far between, if you factor in it can be used for recovery of vehicles it throws into the mix added potential liability and some insurers have the perception some of the owners of such vehicles to be a moral risk.
Having said that there will be markets out there for owners involved in motor sports, save yourself wasting time ringing around the standard markets. Look for adverts in motor sports magazines, brokers specialising in motor sports or ask other competitors in your sport who they use. A policy from a specialist may well be surprisingly cheap as true motor sports enthusiasts could well be a much lower risk.
Do yourself a favour and avoid anything underwritten by Tradex.
If you take out a SDP only use policy be careful of taking anyone else's vehicle as this would not normally cover you if there is any element of payment. Check your policy, a motor sports policy may provide exceptions for occasionally helping a fellow competitor in an emergency
