So after a long time lurking the various threads of PH, I finally find myself with a question that google cannot answer for me, and I'm hoping one of the bright sparks here will be able to help me out.

I've recently purchased a used car (350Z for those wondering) and part of the sale was a private number plate worn by the car many moons ago. It's currently registered as it left the dealer i.e. not a private reg.

The previous owner was kind enough to send off the v778 to the DVLA so I would be able to retain the private reg in case I ever feel like putting it back on the car. Couple of weeks later and I receive a new v778 from the DVLA with the previous owners name on it stating the reg must be assigned to a car by November.

So my question is thus; am I being thick or have the lovely people at the DVLA made a mistake and should I get in touch with them?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, it's my first day.

I think you either have to register it to a car or put it on retention for a year. I think the coat is 80 pounds.

I thought retention certificates were now valid for ten years.

I was hoping you wouldn't correct it and make my post look stupid.
