New online MOT History & Mileage check
Discussion
Hi all,
Just wondering - where or how does the MOT and Mileage check fall under the Data Protection act?
Essentially, I've a relatively old car, owned from new and will never sell it.
I don't want anyone being able to punch in my reg number and find out the MOT details, any advisories and the mileage info because it's got f
k all to do with anyone else.
Now I appreciate that most people have got better things to do - but even so, surely this is private information?

What difference does it make to you exactly? You'll never know who has looked at it, and it doesn't affect you in any way (unless you came to sell).
My question is around the sharing of private information about your personal possessions. Not the theory of it being useful or not.

Hardly - it can't identify you or your address and it doesn't divulge anything about you - the information belongs to the ministry of transport (as they effectively conducted the MOT test), so they are allowed to publish it if they see fitG.
FWIW, it isn't overly difficult to find out lots of information about people and their assets - for example, armed with your address (lifted from the electoral roll) I can find out when you bought your house and how much you paid (and if I could be bothered to pay for the information, lots more too)
Face it, lots of your data is available to those that have very little right to know it, but its not going to change. You should only be really worried if you have something to hide

I have never seen nor agreed to any small print relating to the sharing of information arising from the MOT test (which is a statutory requirement to be able to use the car on the road). The test is paid for as a service - is a contract not entered in to? If it is a statutory requirement for this data to be shared from a service you (a) pay for and (b) can't opt out of, then is this not an unfair term of contract - as it shares information which IS relative to your private possessions.

i think it is great tool, and ufortunely you give away privacy rights owning a car, so lump it.
Please refer to the essence of the question.- It's not about me lumping it.
It's about the sharing of information and is an interesting point of discussion, if kept on track.

I don't see it sharing any personal information.
One example lifted off line is as follows:query said:
Specific vehicles can be linked to individual owners.
Knowing the mileage travelled between two MOT dates might be considered the personal data of those individuals.

It's not a new service - it used to be available at motinfo.direct.gov.uk which included info on the garage that carried out the test as well, although that required a reference number off the v5c or mot cert, presumably to prove a genuine 'interest' in the vehicle either as owner or buyer....
If you don't like it, click the 'feedback' link and tell them to return to the old site format (which you can view by copying the above link into http://archive.org/web/ )

i think you missed your point you wrote 'private information about your personal possessions.'- It's not about me lumping it.

the information about your car that is displayed is not personal, it couldn't identify you.
if i wanted i could find out how much you paid for your house.
If you think that's bad don't ever go on Zoopla!
It shows anybody how much you paid for your property and when.
If it's in the last few years it also links the sale photos to the property from when it was on the market.
So people can see inside the property as it was at purchase.
I never had any contract with the website or paid them anything like you do on an MOT...............
Do I care, not really, but can see why some people would rather it was not public info!
Not sure why your upset about the MOT info though, all it tells you is if the car is road legal or not at a set date?
