Why is it that people are charged for a crime under there original name when they've changed their name?
I presume they've done it by deed poll so can't understand why that names not used in court.
When you change your name have you actually changed it?
The clue is in the your very own thread title!: "his real name"I presume they've done it by deed poll so can't understand why that names not used in court.

That would imply that the name "he" is known by, is not actually "his" legally recognised name, indicating that "he" has never legally changed it.
Take Michael Caine for example: He has never legally changed his name from Maurice Micklewhite to Michael Caine, and was actually knighted by the Queen as Sir Maurice Micklewhite (partly as a tribute to his dad).
Even his passport is made out in the name of Maurice Micklewhite and not Michael Caine because that is his real name.
Had he legally changed his name to Michael Caine then he would not legally be allowed to have a passport in the name of Maurice Micklewhite.

Not a lot of people know that. That would imply that the name "he" is known by, is not actually "his" legally recognised name, indicating that "he" has never legally changed it.

Thanks. That answers my question. That would imply that the name "he" is known by, is not actually "his" legally recognised name, indicating that "he" has never legally changed it.

So I and probably others have wrongly assumed that people have changed their names when in fact they haven't.
I wonder which celebs for instance that would apply to.

Equity don't allow members to use their real name professionally if somebody else is already a member and uses that name or something very similar - even if they're in a very different field. So, if there's a "David Unicorn" in some technical role, Dave Unicorn will have to pick a fake name for acting jobs. But, of course, he might well not want to change his real live everyday legal name.Thankyou4calling said:

Was there not a story (perhaps on PH) about a celeb who has been around for years, being cautioned under his real name for a potentially embarrassing encounter many years ago when his true name was not so well known as it is today. So I and probably others have wrongly assumed that people have changed their names when in fact they haven't.

The general rule is that you can call yourself what you like, although Julian Clary got into spot of trouble when he called himself The Joan Collins Fan Club.
I had the terrible duty once of having to interview a Page 3 girl who had given her 'stage name', as it was delightfully put on the request, at the scene of a reportable accident and a holding address, that of her agent's office. I was told by the originating officer that she had failed to comply with the requirement in the Road Traffic Act to supply her name and address to anyone who reasonably requested it.
I'd asked the CPS for guidance, and in their opinion there was no case to answer as she was 'known' by the name she gave and correspondence regarding the RTA had got to her from the address given.
My father was named Albert Eric Russell Smith. He had an older brother called Albert, known as Bert, and it is probable that his mother wanted him called Albert. However, he took the name Russell and used it all the time. It was the name he used when in the army and no one seemed to worry.

If the page three model had been taken to court for prosecution, what name would have been on the official court documents though? - Her "stage name" or her real name?I'd asked the CPS for guidance, and in their opinion there was no case to answer as she was 'known' by the name she gave and correspondence regarding the RTA had got to her from the address given......

I was stunned a few years back at my Auntie Eileen's funeral, who I (thought) I knew quite well, when the priest in charge started calling her Marjorie!. My Mother explained afterward that was her first name, but because as a child, the other kids called her "Margarine" she reverted to her middle name of Eileen which she used throughout the rest of her life.I had the terrible duty once of having to interview a Page 3 girl who had given her 'stage name', as it was delightfully put on the request, at the scene of a reportable accident and a holding address, that of her agent's office. There are many cases like that, many people were surprised by my fathers name of James at his funeral, as he'd been called by his middle name for almost his entire life.Nigel Worc's said:

(His surname wasn't literally Surname.

i believe that your legal name can be registered with equity assuming it's not all ready used ... the differences required can be small e.g. Harry Corbett of Sooty fame, and Harry H Corbett of steptoe fame
although they now 'discourage' that practice
