I think it would be more accurate to say are you for or against volunteers replacing Police

Hmm not sure. I don't think the specials we have in Hants are replacing full time officers. Yes numbers have shrunk but our specials are only in on the weekend and compliment our strength not replace it.

May's plan is a significant increase in 'volunteers' to replace Officer/PCSO numbers. They are now suggesting 'Special PCSOs'. It's not just about Special Constables.
A volunteer is not covered by Police Regs or under any obligation to work the hours they promise.

Its great right up until they are asked to cover a shift and they cant or dont want to. That role is then filled by a PC that would have been doing their own role leavjng their team short.

You cant make up the lack of officers with unregulated volunteers.

Specials I take my hat off to them but relying on any volunteer workforce is a fking stupid idea.

Even the fact that people are being asked to volunteer shows that the wheel is falling off.

Hey lets get Mrs Miggins to drive an AMBO too.

....I'm very much against it biggrin

Special PCSO's? Is it just me or is that just a pointless idea? It's basically Street Pastors but with a police PCSO stab vest.

Bit of a silly generalisation.

No st May wants more volunteers in the police! I hope we get 0.

There's something of a revolt among the erstwhile supporters of the government (of whatever colour). ACPO, in its new form, and PCCs are highly critical of the substantial reduction in police numbers, currently 24% in some forces with more to come, and a higher percentage reduction. At the moment my old force puts out fewer on average late turn than the bare minimum that they ran with, with some overtime, during the London riots, when the force was asked for 'as many as they could spare'. The conclusion from that is obvious. Next time mutual aid is required either my old force runs with no one on shift or else they let the riots go hang.

In the argument against the cuts, May will now be able to point out that she has provided ample support, these super dupa specials. Which will need training, so instructors, accommodation, uniform and all the other expensive things that will be required.

She's after the top job. She started from a low baseline, and Cameron slapped her down at the conference, but one of her rivals has stumbled. She sees this as a defence against the accusations if the next series of riots comes before the elections.

Volunteer by all means, guys, but come the next round of riots, you'll be on your own. There could even be legislation requiring volunteers to turn out.

I was a big supporter of the Special Constabulary in my old force, but they were used in addition to regulars.

I've no problem with the use of volunteers, I may have a problem with the volunteers themselves outside of their "work" situation.

If I knew one as a friend, I'd certainly, as an absolute minimum, cut down on what I talked to him about, since I coulkd inadvertently admit to something the police deem worthy of investigation, and he'd be passing it on.

Ideally I'd cut down all contact with the person to the bare minimum. I have no desire to associated with any police officer, volunteer or otherwise, they are NOT your friends.

Not you friends until you need them, I guess.

You'd really cut a friend out their life purely on a carer path they've chosen? Excuse my language but you sound like a monumental cock.

One of my best mates has been a Special Constable for years and still enjoys it. Good luck to anyone who wants to do it. I don't agree with specials replacing full time officers though. My understanding is that they should be an additional resource to help the Police, not to be relied upon to make up the numbers.

And its never made any difference to my friendship with the bloke..

The Home Secretary's view 'Police reforming is working & WE, the Conservatives, will drive ahead at ALL costs with reform & cuts!

She had sat inParliament today and said "Crime is falling by 25% - front-line increasing and police reform is working!!!!

Simply unbelievable & misleading the public! How she gets away with such bare faced lies is simply staggering. Even ACPO are finally coming out of the woodwork and sacrificing their QPMs to tell the truth about the damage being done

Yes, that's what happens when you become a police officer. You change from being a friend to someone looking to 'grass you up' at every opportunity.

Don't even get us started on family members!

Sorry if my views sound harsh. So di the activities of the police when they repeatedly lied and attempted to screw me over. They have only themselves to blame, I look after numbe rone, me.

As for "needing them", already had that....some tosser smashed my rear light with a hammer, police were called, when they came out their response was to issue a HORT/1 or whatever it's now called...commonly known as a producer....for the broken rear light. So yes, that's what happens when I "need them", so they don't get called any more.

For some, yes that IS what happens, perhaps not you because I'm sure it's not all of you, but me, I'm just the man in the street and I have no way of knowing so I take no chances.

And that unfortunate attitude has been thoroughly earned by the police themselves. Sorry.
