Motorists face 'zero tolerance' to speeding on motorway
Discussion
I'm surprised I didn't see a thread on this. Olly Martins (Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner) said yesterday at a parliamentary hearing that he was considering leaving the speed limit signs permanently up on the M1 so that he could increase revenue for his financially strapped force.
OK, the signs are on most of the time anyway, but this is a cynical approach and proves once and for all as far as I'm concerned that speeding fines have nothing to do with road safety.
Can he legally do this?

Speaking to MPs yesterday Olly Martins, Bedfordshire's Crime Commissioner, said that he was looking at drastic ways to raise money.
Mr Martins said that he would look to fine every driver caught breaking the speed limit.
Usually forces allow 10 per cent leeway - for example up to 77mph on a 70mph road - but Mr Martins said that he would consider getting rid of it.
He said: 'I'm now looking at are increasing what we raise by maxing out on the speed cameras on the M1. That could potentially raise us £1 million'.
He also said he would welcome easyJet logos on cars in his area, which includes Luton airport where the budget airline is based.
And Craig Mackey, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said that while advertising on cars was legally problematic it appeared to have some support. ‘We would like to look at the whole issue of sponsorship,’ he added.
Senior officers have already claimed they do not have enough officers to crack-down on motorists using their mobile phones behind the wheels.
Some admitted earlier this week that cuts to road patrol officers means the risk of getting caught for traffic offences is ‘probably less than it used to be’.

I wonder if they will still call them "Safety Cameras"?

Don't see the issue, necessarily. As long as the rules are clear, then we can choose to break them and risk the penalty - or not.
Money for police has to come from somewhere.
Rules like, the death penalty for sheep stealing, deportation for starting a trade union, that sort of thing ok with you? As long as they're clear, I mean?Money for police has to come from somewhere.
(Yes I am using deliberately extreme examples to illustrate the point. No I don't equate speeding with stealing and/or the death penalty. YMMMV. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. etc.)

There is more than enough money in the control of Government to fully fund the police force we need. And the NHS for that matter. But whilst so much is wasted on unnecessary political niceties and self interest it'll never be made available.Money for police has to come from somewhere.
Even if this crazy idea were allowed to see the light of day, do you think it would be left in local or police control?

If motorists do not like it then they can always stick to the speed limit.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/11975...I'd love a copper to tell us they will be arresting all burglars, and if burglars don't like it they can always stop committing crimes.
Why do we never hear that, yet we regularly get the passive-aggressive treatment aimed at motorists!?
Another police officer unfit to hold his position because he thinks he can pick and choose which laws to enforce...

Yea. Except a PCC is not a police officer. Why do we never hear that, yet we regularly get the passive-aggressive treatment aimed at motorists!?

Why do these gangsters think they are special? You are not the only ones affected by tory slashers.
If you cant do the job, then just f
g quit. I aint seen no junior doctors' representatives saying they will start carrying adverts on their scrubs or charging drunks on a Friday night.
Much as I disagree with the cuts in police funding, they need to do more to show the public they are using what they have judiciously. No more £10m on guarding Assange or 29 officers of the child of negligent parents type of operations.

The police can "legally" do whatever they want, especially when it comes to oppressing the ordinary people they are supposed to serve, in order to either make money, show them who's boss, or ideally both.
From what he was saying on the today program just now on R4 he is desparate to find money to fight gun crime and other serious crimes [or not have to tackle waste perhaps!!] and he hopes people will blame the government if they are persicuted for minor motoring offences !!! Is all this funding formula stuff that the police and PCCs are going on about, how much they get from Council Tax and how much they get from Central Govt. etc indicating that the police are getting messed around as part of the process of disrupting them so they can be privatised?
PCCs are a trojan horse to help privatise the police or they're the fall guys for when it all goes wrong and the police are rescued by G4S?

The blokes a Muppet,
He tried to up the precept on our council tax this year, although I voted for it (was going to cost us an extra £20 a year) - when the vote failed it cost the force over £600K.
it beggars belief he is now trying to recoup that loss by turning all the cameras on. So much for "safety cameras".
