Driving my works van (Vauxhall movano) on the a64 was doing bang on 70mph

Didn't realise the limit for vans on a dual was 60mph..... Bugger!

Boss got the letter today wasn't bothered as he thought the van was allowed to do 70

On the letter it says a speed awareness is offered if the drivers named

So when my letter comes through will it give me the option of points or the awareness course? And as that's in North Yorkshire do I have to attend there or will I be allowed to attend one in Wakefield?

Can't believe I was doing the speed limit oh so u thought n got done

It's not like dual-carriageways aren't designed for going reasonably fast on, but the rate the jobsworths are going it won't be long till we have a man in front waving a red flag!

You're lucky, some years ago I was nicked for speeding whilst driving back from Manchester on an empty dual-carriageway near Huddersfield/Dewsbury (forget the road) to the M1 south, was doing 57mph in my BMW and in no particular hurry whatsoever. Now had you been driving on that stretch of road in your van you would have been 20mph over the limit so goodness knows what the points and fine would be?

Ought to add that I didn't know that vans are limited to 60mph on dual-carriageways. Are Transit and Vivaro vans exempt from this because I've yet to see one driving at less than 80mph whistle

Apparently all goods vehicles over 2200kg

Even transit connects fall into this category!

This dual carriageway was empty too it was passed Eden camp and there was no one on the road I saw him in the distance looked at my sat nav which said 70mph so just carried on! If I'd have known I would have hit the brakes to at least get down to 60mph

I'm still shocked that I was doing what I thought was the speed limit and been done

Never been done in the van and I've driven them for 14yrs

Now got to tick a box I guess for a speed awareness course, no idea what to expect! We'll probably a copper telling everyone that speed alone kills

Go in with a open mind and you may learn something, like certain vehicles have different speed limits.

Always ready to learn mate,

This thread was more of a: what can I expect in a course? And do you have to do it in the county/area that u were caught? Or can you do it local?

Most of those I know who've done the course have been pleasantly surprised, weren't as patronised as they thought they'd be and came away actually learning a thing or two.

As to choice of venue, if the SCP in the area you were caught is part of the National scheme, then you should be able to arrange to attend a course closer to home.

Almost.

Lower speed limits do not apply to goods vehicles which are dual-purpose vehicles or to derivatives of passenger vehicles with a maximum laden weight not exceeding 2 tonnes (ie car derived vans).

What about pick-ups, e.g. Ford Rangers?

Depends whether or not they meet the criteria for passenger or dual purpose vehicles.

Dual-purpose / passenger vehicle - lower speed limits would not apply.

I drive that section twice nearly every week day. I've seen them sat there when the road is empty time and time again. Its a joke.

Sorry, I fail to see the logic here, what was the speed limit where you were caught?

I know the road well & it`s an easy catch. When I was on it at about 6.30 every morning I couldn`t keep up with the `white vans` heading East. Foreign artics were quite happy at 70 as well.
You haven`t been the only one though - http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2012/jan/11/pensione...

On average 2 mornings a week further East at Barton Crossroads and on average a night a week at the bottom of Whitwell Hill westbound.

Is it just me who's gobsmacked that in all that time it's never become apparent that vans have different limits?

As it's a works vehicle your boss ought to be in trouble too.

There is free tea, coffee and biscuits plus a few muppets on the course, I just completed one about 4 weeks ago, I was caught in Cardiff and did the course in Weston super Mare so you don't have to do it in the area of where you were caught.

I drive the a64 about 2-3 times a week also never seen them passed Eden camp (heading towards Scarborough)

It's usually on the main a64 or that first dual carriageway or just at malton but never up the very top in 8yrs of doing that run!

Lesson learnt tbh I honestly thought cars and vans had the same limits I thought it was just affected if towing trailers or if it was a hgv/artic
