Given the time and mileage accrued since purchase, the total age and mileage of the car and the relatively small sum you paid, my take would be you'll have to suck this one up.

Join the club except I knew it needed a belt! when I discovered a auto box fault within 3 months I said to the dealer look its expensive, I dont want to be a pain in the arse will you make a contribution towards it and they sent me a cheque for £500 on a car costing £5,700. So worth a try - the fix cost me £1200 but I had a new valve chest and a full fluid change as well.

I didn't know (as a recent DSG owner) that the DSGs had DMFs - Gulp!

That's a really awkward point at which to buy a car - it's old enough and with more than enough miles for anything to be fair wear and tear. But it cost an amount that you can't just walk away from.

Get a 2nd opinion before spending anything

Lots of garages see new owner asking what car needs as a mug ready to empty your wallet

It's an old car and no nead to go replacing loads of things at once

to give you idea on price.

DD do clutch DMF for 385 plus 220 fitting.

but have you actually had the car fault read. erratic idea could be a maf issue. Smokey could be age or leaking hoses.

i don't know about dsg but dmf failure is ratteler on idle in gear.

No help I'm afraid, but is it not an indication of how good modern cars are that people are asking if the dealer is liable for a fault on a car that is 9 years old with 142k on the clock?

20 or 30 years ago would anyone have dreamt of asking such a question?

Dealer is liable to sell a vehicle of merchantable quality and whilst I agree its a leggy old car the seller is a company that must stand by it - I reckon you would get a contribution if you sent a nice email.

Yep, I've seen the DMF for about £308 from ECP (the one you link to above is for the Manual gearbox). Garage reckon 8 hours? I've seen people say it's around 4 hours which would halve the labour element.

Not fault read it, but it's rattling, and it's also been surging a little when driving at certain throttle positions. I'm confident it's been diagnosed correctly. Turbo's leaking a bit of oil as well from what we can see of the hoses.

Don't have the facilities to do it myself yet, but I plan on putting a lift into my new workshop when it's built.
4 hours for a dmf change is a little unrealistic.
