Missed delivery and a win for the little guy
Discussion
Thought i'd share a small win I had last week. I'd ordered a freezer from Currys, with delivery booked for Wednesday. Cue Wednesday and (you guessed it) absolutely no sign of them. Rang back on Thursday morning to chase and apparently "Oh, the order was never even put on the system". So I rescheduled the delivery for Saturday am. By 1pm I thought i better ring again and this time it was "The delivery driver hasn't put it into their route"... Errm, ok, so what do you suggest then?!
So, ordered from somewhere else at 4pm Saturday, and they delivered by 9:30am on the Sunday.
A couple of emails to Currys and they've given me a cheque for £30 to compensate for the wasted time waiting in for the delivery.
Thinking about how many times this has happened to me, and must have happened to almost everyone! Turns out that a decently worded email/complaint along with a threat of small claims court for a clear breach of contract can actually yield results!

Funnily enough there was a video on the bbc site today talking about this issue

very strange explanation from the 'consumer expert'
she said, if you took a day off work to wait for a package and it didn't arrive, you have not suffered a loss because you would have done that anyway, but if you have to take a 2nd day off to get it redelivered then you could be entitled to make a claim
makes absolutely no sense to me, you wouldn't have take a day off and waited in if they had not agreed to make the delivery. If you abandon the idea of getting your widget and don't arrange redelivery, have you really not suffered a loss ?

...because taking a day off for a delivery is a normal part of life.
You're only worse off if you have to take a second day off because you wouldn't normally expect to have to do that.
Only if you deal with cheap-and-nasty companies like Currys. You're only worse off if you have to take a second day off because you wouldn't normally expect to have to do that.
Most decent firms will give you a 'window' not a full-day slot, even if only the day before...and many will do Saturdays.

The point she was making was you took the day off which you HAD to do in order to take delivery. Whether it turns up or not, you still had to take that day off. It's only if and when you take ANOTHER day off for the rescheduled delivery that you've suffered the loss of another day off. Up until then you've had one day off, which you would've had even if it turned up.

Why do delivery companies give time slots between 10.04 and 11.04 and not just between 10am and 11am and then arrive at 9.50 as today?
Because they're doing more deliveries than just yours. It's all based on travel time, time it takes to previous deliveries etc etc It's not spot on all the time but it's a good guide. DPD's system is good but not so much when they arrive 20 mins early and sit outside the house because they can't deliver until the time slot

I can understand the guys not wanting to deliver early.
It's not that they don't want to, they physically can't. As my brother found out when chatting to the chap while he was sat outside his house. The drops the driver has in that time slot don't become active on his machine until that time. so even if the driver wanted to give the customer the pkg they wouldn't be able to scan/sign for itI ordered a washing machine from them a few years ago, and it eventually turned up at around 6pm.
Driver said it had been damaged (it had a small scratch on the top where something else had been sat on it.
He said that they didn't want to have to take it back, so he called his boss who took £100 off the price if we accepted it, which we did

AO are utterly brilliant, deserving of all the praise heaped upon them.
Agreed, however I ordered several items from them within a few weeks and after each item was delivered I had the predictable call trying to sell me extended warranty. After the third time I responded to their email asking for feedback with a rather negative response- I received a personal letter of apology from them in the post (I hadn't complained, this was just a survey thing). They are great on prices, delivery and customer service. Just the sales calls that pisses me off.
