Every new vehicle must have "eCall" installed from 2018, according to European Union laws.

The eCall system within each vehicle includes:

1) a GPS tracking device
2) a data link to the authorities
3) an internal microphone and other sensors

The primary purpose of eCall is to prevent deaths and reduce serious injuries following collisions. When a collision occurs, eCall should automatically contact the emergency services and the operator will ask the occupants if they are ok. If required, the operator can send Police or an ambulance to the GPS co-ordinates supplied by eCall.

eCall has a host of other potential uses, such as:

investigate potential terrorists
track criminals
prosecute speed limit infringements
plot road usage to design new junctions, improve public transport etc
confirm parents correct home address for schools admissions
evaluate tax returns (especially self-employed)

If an engine-kill facility is added to Ecall then not only can citizens be monitored but, if any offence is suspected, the vehicle can be stopped immediately (eg stolen cars, terrorists, drug dealers, drunk drivers etc).

The eCall system may be the most powerful surveillance tool yet devised and it really is capable of saving lives.

That should ensure the sale of secondhand vehicles prices remain high for pre 'bugged' vehicles.

Source?

It doesn't do any of the tracking/monitoring stuff you suggest.

If what you say is correct, then it is more capable of destroying the freedoms that many thousands of brave men died to protect. For such a thing to put out at this time of year is even more offensive to me.

Nah, not enough mentions of how much somebody random's house was worth. But a decent effort, all the same.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-32495058

All that's sent is... type of vehicle, fuel used, time of accident, location - to the emergency service response number, and only when airbags are set off.

But, hey, let's not let facts and reality get in the way of a good conspiracy theory rant, eh?

And as for the "this time of year" vacuous guff - you'll notice the date of that article? The vote was 28th April this year.

And the rest, they needed a good idea on how to route the calls so needed to know to some extent where you were to get the call to the right cell. Thing is, if you were really into tin foil battery you remove the battery.

This EU stuff will have a no tamper thingamabob with a legal price. It will be verboten and the manufacturers, who like the idea of making more money, will pass the cost on.

Hope it never sees the light of day as it was envisaged at the start of this year. Not sure where the plan it snow. Thought it had been kicked into touch?

Did you read the link I posted? Being technically capable of doing a thing is not the same as actually doing it. As currently designed while it does use GPS to "track" where you are the information is held entirely within the car until an accident occurs at which point it activates the celluar data system and uses it to report your location.

"The public Pan European 112 eCall In-Vehicle System (IVS) remains dormant (that means not connected to the mobile phone networks) until a serious accident happens, therefore no tracking or transmission of data takes place during the normal operation of the system."

The cost will be tiny, the privacy implications are controlled by EU law and it will save lives. I'm all in favour.

Been fitted to some GM cars in the US since 1996.

Most manufacturers have similar in the US, then there's BMW Assist, Mercedes Comand already available in the UK...

As a compulsory, optional extra different. But I think the EU want it compulsory.

It gets an airing in one of the die hard films so it is also handy for saving the day.

The company I work for, and many similar already use different variations of this.

1, We have a separate driving test, then issued a personalised secondary key.
2, The key works in any company vehicle identifying you to it, misuse leads to sack.
3, We have speed restrictions. Go above you get a beep, and lose out on your monthly scoring system
4, Brake too hard the same applies, drive 50klms you can lose 1 beep score. (Yesterday I drove 50klms just to reduce my count).
5, Too many beeps you go from green to amber. Two amber in a row, verbal warning. You don't want red.
6, Each country is separated into zones. You don't know exactly where the zone lines are so you have to be careful. Pass the zone and you get points off your separate licence. 4 points for going over the zone.
7, ejourney, if you intend going through a zone, multiple zone you must complete a spreadsheet, describing everything about where, why, weather, time, Stop points, hours sleep etc. This must be approved by an approver.
8, You have to phone journey management before you depart, or you receive points, stop after 2 hours driving minimum 15 minutes. During this stop phone journey management. When you reach destination, again phone and terminate ejourney.

There's more I've forgotten, get ready for it. It will come. All about reducing road accidents, my job has nothing to do with driving. I work in eec, I have now brought my Lotus here as my 'free company car' could lose me my job, especially with my very bad anti social driving habits.
.
I had a warning the other day, needed to resit my annual driving inspection test, during the test I was informed that I had to calm down how I drive my personal car. It had been noticed by a few people and I should be 'setting an example'.

-hazard lights and beep horn before reversing.

The equipment we have in our patrol cars is eight years old. It fails every day. I wouldn't worry about your car being turned off by Police as you drive it.

Ok in their company vehicle but I wonder how on earth they can enforce Rules whilst you are driving your own car?
